SJ snorted. “She sounds like a flock of birds flying overhead.”

Sebastian growled at his son. “Watch it. Be nice to your sister, SJ.”

Sam flipped her brother off behind Sebastian’s back and smiled shyly at me. “Thanks. You’re a lot nicer than Dad’s first girlfriend.”

I laughed at the horrified expression that slammed over her dad’s face. “I appreciate that.”

“Shouldn’t you two be on your way to school?” Sebastian shook his head. “Shouldn’t you two be on your way to school, as well?”

I felt my cheeks warm at his stern tone and nodded. “We just wanted to stop by and give you your wallet back. You must’ve forgotten it last night.”

SJ whistled. “Wow, Dad, you slut.”

Sam cackled even harder and high-fived her brother. “A complete slut.”

Avery looked up at me. “What’s a slut?”

I looked up at Sebastian. “Yeah, Sebastian. What’s a slut?”

Iparked in front of Fiona’s new house and hesitated before turning the truck off. Roman and Racey were with me and Roman’s attitude had been so terrible lately that I was worried about bringing him in to meet Fiona. I wanted for them to get along but I knew Roman was slowly being poisoned by his mother’s negativity and the shit he heard at school about me. It made him angry and I was the natural target for that anger. I could handle it, but he’d started letting it out on other people, too.

I looked over at him and nodded, doing my best to appear positive. “How are you feeling about this?”

He frowned at me and looked out his window, avoiding my gaze. “How do you think I feel about it?”

I glanced back at Racey who was doing his best to copy his older brother. “Race? You okay?”

His eyes went wide and he pointed towards the house. “Is that her?”

A laugh bubbled up out of my chest when I caught sight of Fiona. She was holding a water balloon in each hand and she was soaked from head to toe. Her grin was mischievous and I felt a jolt of electricity shoot through my body at the sight of her.

“That’s her.”

Roman sat forward. “What’s she doing?”

“I think she’s declaring war.” I watched in amazement as his lips twitched, as if he wanted to smile. “How should we handle this? Use Race as a human shield and charge past her?”

Race protested. “Hey!”

Fiona was suddenly hit with a spray of water from behind and Avery ran out of the open garage with a super soaker. She spun around and popped one of her balloons over his head while letting out what could only be described as a battle cry.

“Whoa.” Roman turned to face me and the excitement shining back at me from his eyes was a breath of fresh air. “Can we play?”

I nodded. “Yeah. Go for it. Watch out for the hippy running around. For a yoga loving loon, I feel like she’s probably got the biggest water gun available and is waiting to use it.”

Avery spotted the boys getting out of the truck and ran towards them. “Come on! Kids against grown ups! I’ve got more guns in the backyard!”

I was slower getting out of the truck. I could see the eagerness in Fiona’s eyes to soak me. I moved towards her and smirked. “Well, this is a surprise.”

She cocked her hip out to the side and gave me a sweet smile. “It just sort of happened. Something about having this much grass to play on makes us all a little slap happy.”

“Oh, yeah? How slap happy?”

She batted her eyes at me. “You can trust me, Ryder. I’m not going to splash you.”
