“Hurry up!” one of them shouted, pushing me to move faster.

Trying to get a grip, I urged myself to stay calm. To have faith that the whole situation might have a better ending than I was imagining.

“Cooperate and you won’t get hurt,” one of them snapped at me, sending a shiver down my spine.

In a blur, doors were shoved open and the cool evening air hit me at once. Brakes squealed, a door popped open, and I was being ushered into a vehicle before I could protest or put up a real fight.

Several car doors slammed shut, and the vehicle lurched into motion.

Through the silence within the car, my ears rang and my pulse hammered away. I couldn’t think straight, not when I was completely blindsided by what happened.

One moment, the professor was droning on while I focused on the lecture, and the next, the hall was being stormed by heavily armed men.

I silently hoped that everyone else was alright.

Nobody said a word as the vehicle sped down the road, and my stomach was heavy with dread.

I was in a situation I never wanted to be in. I couldn’t understand how my brothers’ lifestyle managed to follow me despite how hard I tried to get away from it.

It seemed I didn’t have to go looking for it after all.

Chapter 4 - Nik

The ride through the city was painfully quiet, but it allowed me to sit with my disbelief. To soak in the fact that the plan worked, and Anastasia was in my possession at last.

She was practically shaking in the back seat, but she didn’t say a word either. She had no choice but to sit there and wait it out.

While I couldn’t ignore the guilt that trickled into my system at the thought of having to be so forceful with her, I knew I didn’t have a choice, either. She never would’ve come willingly.

Despite how capturing her was technically a job for my boss, that unspoken motive of mine sat heavily in the back of my mind.

It made me wonder what my next move was, and how I would possibly begin things with Anastasia. What would I say to her after hauling her out of that lecture and into a vehicle? What would she think when she eventually found out it was me?

Too many thoughts were clashing in my mind, and I forced them all into silence. I couldn’t sit there and dwell on it. I was on a job, and I needed to make sure that nothing else happened.

Even if we had the element of surprise on our side, I couldn’t completely dismiss the possibility that the Levovs might hear about it sooner rather than later. They had men all over the city, and it wouldn’t take much for them to get on our trail.

The night seemed to get only darker as we drove, eventually pulling up to the mansion just before midnight. We received word that most of the house was asleep already, and we were to head in through the garage. The less noise, the better.

Regardless of the remaining unknowns ahead of us, the job had been successful, and I tried to remind myself of that. It was a moment of triumph, even if I felt somewhat bad that Anastasia was in the middle of it.

But then again, she hailed from the world I tried to keep her from. Surely she was used to it.

Gabe pulled in through the gates out front once they opened and drove down the expansive driveway.

Erasmo wasn’t shy about his wealth, especially when it came to his home. The yard was perfectly manicured with grass that was never an inch shorter or longer, the hedges were trimmed to his liking, and he always said the flowerbeds were for his wife, but we all knew he personally selected the types and colors. He was very particular about that kind of thing.

The SUV parked just outside of the house and we climbed out. I immediately went to Anastasia’s side and popped the door open.

“Come out. Don’t make a sound when we get inside. I mean it.”

Her lack of response was a good sign, and with assistance, she got out. Holding her restraints at her lower back, I tried to not think about our time together. I told myself that it wasn’t the time or place. The job wasn’t done until Erasmo gave his confirmation.

Guiding her inside through the garage, which was teeming with cars, both vintage and new luxury, I kept my focus on getting to the boss.

As we reached the far corridor from where the family’s bedrooms were, a coworker stationed inside came to see what was going on.

“Let the boss know we’re back. The job’s done.”
