“Oh alright, just checking. We better stop talking before

Ma comes back over and hears us!” Marco chuckles. “She

might beat our asses.”

“Yeah, she doesn’t like us talking about the jobs,” I say

with a laugh as we head over to the table where our family

dinner awaits us.

Despite everything else going on in our lives - the

violence, the danger - I always look forward to these

Saturday dinners with my family. It was the one thing that

keeps me grounded and reminds me of who I used to be

before getting involved in this criminal underworld.

After a long week , I am finally able to relax at pops

house, I feel a sense of peace wash over me for the first

time in weeks. For once I can forget about all the darkness

surrounding me and just enjoy being around the people who

love me unconditionally. Pops can be a tight ass, but he

does show us that he cares for us. Even if he’s breathing

down our necks.

Ma’s cooking always brings a sense of comfort to me. The

smell of her pasta fills the house and my nose, making my

mouth water in anticipation. Leaning against the doorway

to the kitchen I can’t help but smile as I watch her move

around the kitchen with ease, humming a tune under her

breath. It was times like these that made me forget about

the negatives that came with being part of the family

business.
