My gaze flicks towards the door, finding it empty where Kady once stood, and I drop my eyes to my boots in disappointment.

“Give her time,” is all Rookie says.

I nod without saying anything. Then I reach for my son, my mom handing him over but sticking close to me.

His eyes are open, and I know he can’t focus on anything at this age, but I feel like he is looking deep into my heart, stealing it. Wrapping his tiny fist around it and holding on for dear life.

Running my finger down the side of his face and head, I take in the feel of his soft skin and wispy hair. His little nose, his thin lips—he looks just like I did from the baby photos I have seen around my parents’ house.

Fuck, I wish Kady was here to experience this with me. We may be new, but I feel that there could be something big between us, and I don’t just mean my big cock.

“So come on, brother. What are you calling him?” Opal asks.

Lifting my gaze to my father and my mother then over to my brother, I smile.

“My father and uncle came over from Ireland many years ago. They both have Irish names, so does my blood brother, Finan. My mom’s birth family has Scottish blood, that is why they named me Calder. So I think I am going to stick with my Irish roots this time.”

I take a deep breath, looking back down at my son.

“Kane. His name is Kane Price.”

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

KADY

My body goes numb hearing this woman tell Calder that he has a baby boy.

That some woman he hooked up with got pregnant by him but was unable to look after the baby, so she surrendered him.

I know that some people will have a few choice words to say about her, but you never know what someone is going through. It is their life to live, and they have to do what is best for them.

“Kady.” I force my attention off Calder to look at my sister.

Her brow is dipped, her eyes are glassy. Since being pregnant, Tree has been overly emotional.

“You okay?” she asks me.

“Not really.” I shake my head.

“This is a shock; I can see that, but you need to go over there and support him.”

“I can’t, I—” My words get caught in my throat.

My eyes fill with tears, my nose burns as I look across the room. Calder’s face shows his shock, his fear, and it makes my stomach hurt.

“CALDER,” he snaps loudly making me jump, then he sighs. “Just Calder is fine. Sorry.”

“Go to him, Kady.”

My body feels like cement, stuck in place. I can’t go to him.

Having kids was never in my future; I was happy being the cool aunty when kids did eventually come along. So many emotions are racing through my body while I watch everything play out across the room. I am unable to tear my eyes away from the little bundle in the car seat. The soft looking grey blanket covering the baby boy.

“I can’t.”

“What do you mean, you can’t? He fucking needs you, Sis,” she grinds out.

“We can’t move into something new with this landing in his lap. That baby needs to be his focus.” I sigh. “I never wanted kids, Tree. Never saw it in my future.”
