She wrinkles her nose.

“Your little man is a mess with his food. He stinks all the time.” She pinches her nose for dramatic effect. “I eat my food better than him.”

I fake gasp, my hand going to my chest. “My son does not stink, you take that back, little miss.”

“Nope.” She pops the ‘p,’ grinning.

“Adley Jane, I told you to wash your face before leaving the kitchen,” Astrid’s voice carries through the room.

I bring my face closer to Adley’s, smirking. “Busted, kid.”

“Am not.”

“Are too.”

“Nah, uh. My mommy loves me; she never gets mad at me like she does Daddy.” She crosses her tiny arms over the front of her body, showing me attitude.

Good; she needs to learn to stand up for herself. To know how to mouth off to scare people away, but she will also learn to defend herself physically.

“I bet she gets mad at you too, Adley, you calling boys like me stinky.”

“Nuh uh, I am an angel.”

“If you say so.”

“I do say so.”

I scoff, making her give me a fiercer look, her eyes narrowing on me, and I have to bite my lip from laughing at her.

“Brother, you are having a verbal battle with a five-year-old,” Jack chimes in.

“I am almost six, Uncle Jack.”

“Oh, I am sorry, Miss Adley. Almost six-year-old,” Jack corrects himself.

“You remember that.” She pokes the air at him.

“Got it.” We all giggle.

“You just got scolded by a six-year-old, brother.” I laugh.

“Reel it in, Calder; you are forgetting who will be around this little guy growing up. He is going to be worse than Adley. God, he will be hell on wheels.” Kady shakes her head at her words.

“So, what you are saying is that you will be around to help raise him.” I move to lean into her, our noses almost touching. “By my side.”

She rolls her eyes. “This may scare the piss out of me, Calder, but we stick together and we will do good. I mean, I will have to be there to show him what real women want, not some fake bimbos who play on being easy to men who don’t have to work for it.” She winks at me.

“Is Aunty Kady Kane’s mommy now?”

I hear a few gasps, but I keep my focus on the little girl in front of me. The one who captured my heart the second we saved her.

“Maybe one day. You know that Kane has only just come to us.” She nods her little head. “Well, I have to get used to being his daddy first, then maybe Kady will be his mommy one day.”

“But why not now? She is holding him, like Aunty Willa holds Mable. She can be his mommy now. All babies need a mommy.” Her little lip quivers.

Fuck me. Pain slices through my chest at her words. Sniffles sound around me as I pick Adley up and set her in my lap. I swipe away the tears that are slipping down her chubby cheeks.

“Kane will have a mommy, sweet pea, I can tell you that right now. He will have the best mommy like you do, and Willa and Juni do.”
