Her hair is greasy, her skin pasty and she looks strung out. The clothes she is wearing are filthy, like she has been sleeping rough. The Children’s Services lady said that they had lost track of her, and Maverick has been looking but never found any details on her.

“What are you doing here, Leslie?” I call to her.

“I want my baby,” she states, trying to look sober and clean.

“You are not getting him back, Leslie. Where have you been?” I step forward, and I feel my brothers close in.

They will never let me, or anyone else, stand alone.

“That don’t matter, Calder. Get me my baby. NOW!” she screams.

“It does matter, Leslie. You are looking in no fucking fit shape to take care of a baby. You need to help yourself. My son is exactly that, my son. You signed any rights to him away.”

“I carried him. I took care of him. I pushed him out of my body. I have a right to him. GET. HIM.”

“You have no rights to him.” I spin on my heel, seeing Kady walking towards us with purpose. She sidesteps Finan and comes to stand next to me.

“By the looks of you, when you gave him up that was the best thing you could have ever done for him. Clearly you chose drugs over your son. You disgust me,” Kady snaps.

My heart warms even more seeing her defend Kane like she is. A proud mama bear.

“Fuck you, you don’t know me,” Leslie hisses.

“Maybe not, but from what I can see, you never should be allowed to have children. You need help, lots of fucking help. When I found out about the baby, I felt sorry for you. I heard that you were struggling, and you did a great thing out of love for your baby, but right now all I see is a washed-up junkie.”

“YOU CUNT!” Leslie screams pulling a gun from behind her back.

I push Kady behind me, my blood boiling in anger, but fear laces through me.

“Put the gun down.” Travis and Royal step forward.

“Not until you give me my baby.”

“You know we can’t do that. Kane is safe here with Calder and Kady. Do what is best, Leslie, get some help.”

“Cal is on his way.”

“That bitch is not his mother, I am.”

“No, Leslie, you are not. You had the option to get clean, to keep him with you, but you took the wrong path,” I tell her.

Looking over my shoulder, I nod to my brother. “Take her.”

“No, Calder. I want to stay with you, we need to face her together.”

“Baby, go inside with Finan. Check on our son. Now.” I leave no room for an argument.

With a weak smile, her worry shining in her eyes, she lets my brother drag her inside.

“That bitch is not keeping my baby. Get him now.” The gun wavers, like she is losing strength to keep it pointing straight.

“Kady has been a mother to Kane for longer than you have. You need help, Leslie. Maybe, and just maybe, when you are clean, we can look into you seeing Kane.”

Her eyes find mine, after she followed where Kady went.

Tears fill her eyes, sobs breaking from her. It guts me that it has come to this, but some people find it hard to kick a habit. The drugs or alcohol take a hold of you and sink their teeth so deep that most do not ever break free.

People make choices that are the right things to do, and others don’t. That path causes destruction, pain, and heartbreak.
