Micah tips my chin up, making it impossible for me to hide my tears or the way my lower lip trembles. He runs his thumb over it, wiping a tear sliding down.

“Eva, I wouldn’t hate you, not even if you’d slept with Romano. There’s nothing you can do that would make me stop...wanting you.” There’s a tremor of honesty in his voice that makes me feel all sorts of things I shouldn’t feel. Hope makes the top of the list.

He bends down and sucks my lower lip between his, tasting my tears along with it. I melt into him and sigh in his mouth, giving in completely to the moment. My hands run along his back, my fingers curling into the devil tattoo, wanting to tear it off of him. We might not have a future, and he’ll surely hate me in the end, but I’ll be damned if I let either Romano or his own darkness consume him.

As he lays down on the fire escape landing and pulls me on top of him, I make the decision.

I’ll go as his date to Romano’s ball, and I’ll do what must be done. Then, when I know they’re safe, I’ll give him the one thing he cared about all his life. I’ll make sure he finds what he’s always been looking for.

Then I’ll run away, before he can unleash his vengeance on me. Compared to what I did, getting on my knees for his stepfather will seem like a minor offense.

CHAPTER IX

Micah

The driveway in front of the Royales mansion is packed tonight. My eyes run over the license plates, committing all of them to memory. I do the same with the faces.

“In moments like this, I’m glad I didn’t kill you,” Carlton mumbles from my side, looking sharper in his designer suit than anyone with his bulk should ever look. The thing about Carlton’s mass is that it’s also athletically shaped, which makes him look agile as a cheetah instead of heavy as a bull. The tattoos crawling up his neck contrast even more with his elegant appearance, but he pulls off the look just fine. Mine, on the other hand, grabs attention because of how at odds it is with the occasion. Unlike the others, who are wearing shirts underneath their black suit jackets, I’m wearing a black turtleneck under my fitted black suit, and I didn’t remove the piercings in my eyebrow. It gives an extra mafia air to my looks, and helps mask the fact that my brain is as much of an asset for the Kings as my killer instinct.

“This event is huge,” I say under my breath. “Way bigger than anything the fucker has hosted before.” The sheer amount of shiny Porsches and Lamborghinis outside is astounding, the flashy dresses and jewels adorning the women making the luxurious decorations all around the patio look almost drab.

But none of the polished, plastically-enhanced women who prance up the stairs have anything on Eva. It fucking hurts to pretend that I’m not aware of her standing with Justine by the high top tables on the patio, drinks in their hands. I didn’t want to draw the Elders’ attention to her just yet and put her in danger, so we drove here early in my black Maserati.

Every glance I sneak at her reminds me that I have a heart in my chest, so I try to keep those glances at a minimum, but I seem to fail. She looks stunning in her long, glittery, off-the-shoulder dress. There’s a side leg split in it that will give me access to her pussy later, when I’ll take my reward for the night after I’ve finally killed the bastard who put her into my path in the first place.

If I make it out of here alive, that is.

An evil smirk lifts the corner of my mouth as I think about the butt plug I made her wear tonight. It’s the reason why her spine is extra stiff, her beautiful ivory shoulders pulled back. She must think about me with every step she takes, and that’s what keeps me sharp and extra deadly. It’s what fuels me.

“What the fuck was he thinking when he didn’t send the invites on time?” Sade mumbles, his expert killer’s eyes sweeping over the swelling crowd of attendees. “The Elders won’t let him get away with this.”

“If the Elders even make it out of here alive.”

All of our eyes cut over to Damon when he says that. He keeps his own on the crowd, scanning it like a supercomputer. A diabolical supercomputer. Suddenly, things start to make sense. I look at the crowd again. We have a lot of guards in place, and we alerted the Elders that something’s not right about this event, but then again, all of these people are bringing their own security. With undercover Morningstars among them, some are bound to be as well trained as us. I cut a sharp look at my brother.

“We’ve got this,” he says quietly.
