I put my coffee down and reach for her hands over the table. “Listen, Mel, I need you to trust me on this one, okay?” I say the next words with emphasis to make her see that I’m telling the truth. “I’m not sleeping with him. I never have, and I never will.”

“Then what were you doing meeting him at a hotel? You clearly did it often enough for Micah to get multiple pictures of you in questionable situations.”

“If I tell you why I’m really seeing Romano, he’ll destroy me. Believe me, Mel, he’s really got me by the balls.”

She frowns, but that’s the only sign of disapproval that she gives me. There’s an inner elegance and gracefulness to Mel Sorbaine that drew my attention from the first time I saw her. It spoke of grace and nobility on the inside as well, and I really needed a friend like her at that point. I’m beyond grateful that she’s been in my life ever since, and I never kept secrets from her—except one. A secret that only Romano ever discovered, and that he’s now using against me.

“How about you stay at my house for a few weeks until things cool down? That way Micah can’t bother you anymore. You could take some time off from work, and I’ll make sure—”

I shake my head. “Let me remind you that when Justine stayed at your place, Sade almost ended up killing your guards. Your family is powerful, but they’re no match for the Kings, and I’d only be putting all of you in danger.”

Her frown deepens because of course, she sees my point.

“So what do you need me to do?”

“Help me run away.”

“Say what?”

“I’ll do what Romano wants, and then I’ll disappear. Immediately after I’m done. I won’t terminate my contract with the university first because that would put Micah on guard.”

Mel winces as if the words hit her in the chest. The prospect of separating from her cuts into my heart as well, but there’s no way around it.

“That would ruin your entire future,” she argues. “You have a fantastic track record. You can’t just throw away everything you worked for because of this bastard.”

“I have to, Mel, and the sooner the better. Micah is the most volatile and unpredictable of all the Kings, and the longer I stick around, the more dangerous he can become.”

She shakes her head like this is a bad idea. “He won’t stop searching for you. You’ll be a fugitive all your life. You might as well go to prison.”

“It’s true. I might as well. But we both know that staying around Micah Royales when he’s on a mission to destroy me is not the better option.”

Mel hugs herself against the chill that runs through her body.

Micah is an unhinged terminator, and every single person at Norton King’s is painfully aware of that. Even cartel bosses dread ending up on his blacklist.

As for the women...

There are stories about Micah being the result of a gang-bang. His stepfather may seem like the perfect billionaire gentleman with those streaks of white running through his full head of dark hair, his perfectly tailored suits, and his shiny shoes, but he’s a monster on the inside. It’s because of him that Annabelle, Sade and Micah’s mother, ended up in a lunatic asylum. There are rumors that Romano drugged her and watched dozens of men have their way with her.

Apparently, that’s how Annabelle got pregnant with Micah. While Sade knows that his biological father was his mother’s high school sweetheart, whom Romano murdered in order to marry her and get his hands on her money, Micah doesn’t have a clue who fathered him. That would be enough to break a child’s soul, let alone all the horrors that Romano put the boys through afterward.

But while Sade has found balance and happiness with Justine, Micah is still profoundly damaged. Like Sade once said, to him, everybody is either a backstabber or a whore. It’s not only that he chooses to see the bad in everyone, but that he actually looks for it.

One thing I must give him, though. Micah has never fucked a woman against her will. Girls are absolutely crazy about him on campus, some downright screaming when he appears on his bike like a rockstar. Those girls would do just about anything for a piece of him, and he never made a secret of his preference for gang bangs. He likes to watch his bikers fuck the girls in all their holes before they throw them at his feet. Only then does he grant them the privilege of sucking his dick. To think that those girls are happy about it, and tell the story as if that makes them special, chills the blood in my veins. But the most exclusive he ever got with someone was the occasional blow-job or ass-fucking in the college closets.

As for me, he said that he wouldn’t share me with his bikers, and I’ve heard enough about Micah to expect that to be true. Everybody knows to take his promises seriously—as well as his threats. Which is why him suggesting that my fate would be worse than him sharing me with his guys scares the shit out of me.

I can still taste his thumb in my mouth, still see the savage decision in his eyes.

“You can’t just throw everything away, Eva,” Mel insists. “You worked hard for your career. Maybe you could resign and ask the university for recommendations. That way, you can at least find a new job and, I don’t know—” she scratches her head through her heavy chestnut hair, “—maybe we can turn to Sade, and he can talk sense into his brother.”

“Let us wait and see how much Sade already knows, and if he doesn’t know anything, we keep it that way. The last thing I need is another King on my case. I’ll just get Romano’s job done as quickly as possible, and then I’ll disappear. All I’m asking is that you help me with that,” I plead.

Our conversation is cut short when Sade and Justine stroll into the cafeteria, all tanned and smiling after two weeks in the Maldives, his arm around her shoulders. Together, they brighten up the room, they look so happy. My heart flutters with joy for the first time in weeks.

They had a dark story, those two, but they were crazy about each other from the start, and their twisted attraction developed into a mindblowing love story. Sade, once a brooding King with anger issues and permanently bruised knuckles is now a happy man with the aura of a guardian angel.

His arm falls off his fiancée’s shoulders as she slides into her seat between Mel and me, hugging Mel, but I notice the discomfort on his face. If he had his way, a part of his body would always be making contact with Justine’s, but he’s aware she needs her space now and then, and I guess he’s learning to respect her boundaries.
