I’d strike a deal with the devil if it meant having this woman chained to me forever. I’d perform satanic rituals if I had to.

Because she doesn’t belong to me yet, not completely, and that makes me feral.

“We still don’t know what Romano did to her,” Eva all but cries. “The staff wouldn’t tell me. They could have made her swallow a bomb for all we know.”

My eyes scan the girl up and down, assessing her state.

“Your sister is innocent,” I say flatly. “I never hurt innocent people, and I sure as hell never use them as instruments against others.” I take a step closer, scrutinizing her eyes as they follow mine. “I suggest we have the staff check her out, head to toe. I’m thinking of a complete set of tests, bloodwork and scans, all done ASAP. We’ll have all the answers we need in less than an hour.”

Eva wipes her nose with the back of her hand, holding her sister’s head to her shoulder with the other.

“You...you’d do that for me? Despite how I—-?” Betrayed you. That’s what she wants to say, but she can’t bring herself to say it.

I know the way I look at her scares her, but the reason I don’t blink when I’m around this woman is that I can’t get enough of her. Every blink is wasted time that I could spend drinking her in. I’d guzzle down poison if she offered it to me with the same love she had in her eyes at her apartment. Back when I thought what we had could only end in tragedy. That all I had were those last days and nights with her. But I had every intention to make good on my promise and fuck her tight little ass before I went down. I’d leave her so sore in all her holes that she’d find it impossible to ever forget me. It was my way of branding myself into her, becoming part of her. I selfishly wanted to traumatize her with pleasure and pain, engrave myself in her memory, and make her mine even beyond the grave.

But I survived last night. And now, as the winter sun filters through the curtains behind the two women, I see the truth in a new light—I’m ready to do everything in my power to make Eva Brannan happy.

In every way a devil like me can make a woman happy.

Yes, she lied to me about my mother. She held the key that enslaved me to Romano in the palm of her hand, and didn’t hand it over until the last moment. Yet I wouldn’t be standing here today if it weren’t for her. She crawled over to Rufus’ corpse, and searched him for anything that might help like an Amazon warrior. With a little training, she’d kick serious ass. It fills me with pride just to think about it, and somewhere in the back of my head, the idea of actually training her starts to look good. Not to use her in our bloody operations and destroy her soul, of course, but just to give her the instruments to protect herself. To empower her.

But I’m not about to let her see that just yet.

“I’d do that for you and more. And while your sister is off for her examination, you’ll subject yourself to my will.”

Eva shakes her head, her eyes wild with fear. She tries to hold her sister further away from me as I approach.

“No. I won’t leave her. I have to be with her every step of the way; she needs me.”

I frown down at the woman I love. I’ve never had trouble keeping a cold mask on my face, but it’s hell to do it now. Maybe it’s all the blood that I lost, or the onslaught of feeling that I’m not used to, but my control could slip any second.

Yet if I force this on her, she won’t be able to give in completely to what I have planned for her. And anything less than complete surrender won’t do.

“I promise you, Eva, your sister will be in very good hands.”

“Whose hands?” she pushes, her eyes wild with worry. She’d be able to fight me for this, even knowing she has no chance of winning.

I didn’t mean to involve the others in this, but Justine insisted she’ll be there for me anytime I need her, like a real sister, so I pull out my phone and call her. I keep my eyes on Eva as I talk. Of course, she doesn’t know who’s at the other end of the line, and the next ten minutes as we wait for Justine to appear must feel like an awkward eternity for her.

Not me, though. I could stand here, watching her, for hours. My focus disturbs her as it always does, making her squirm. My eyes rake down her body, taking in her hoodie and her denim leggings. Are those Sade and Justine’s clothes?

“Are you still wearing the—” My gaze flicks over to her little sister, and I choose another word. “The toy I gave you.”

She shakes her head. “I took it out in Justine’s bathroom.”

I can’t keep a smirk from curling up my mouth. “Well, you shouldn’t have done that.”

Eva stares at me with a mixture of fear and disbelief that I would care about something like that right now, but I keep my smirk on.

When Justine finally walks into the room, Eva’s jaw drops.

“You,” she whispers. “You told him?”

Justine shakes her head, desperate for her friend to believe her. “He already knew. About Goldie, her condition, and where she was kept. He just didn’t know his mother was here, too.” She walks slowly toward her friend, careful about how she approaches her.

“I’ll make sure she gets all the tests she needs,” she says gently, trying to pry Eva’s hands from her sister’s. When Eva tightens her grip even more, she continues even more softly, looking deep into Eva’s eyes. “I promise, I’ll protect her with my life.”

Eva searches her friend’s gaze for a few moments before she gives in, and Justine can finally take Goldie away. The girl tries to jerk herself from Justine’s grip on her elbow, but her sister encourages her.
