I remember when loving arms first held me. Only that this is bigger. Amplified. Completely blown out of proportion. It’s like bathing in a sea of chocolate after you’ve been starving for a lifetime.

“But we have to look truth in the face,” she says with a sadness that has no place between us now. “We can’t technically be together because, well, you are promised.” She pauses at those last words as if she’s trying to swallow a jagged pill. “The Elders will never allow it. Still, I heard that other Kings around the country have concubines. It’s rare, and it’s frowned upon, but I’m willing to—”

“You leave the Elders to me.” I’ll be damned if I let anyone come between us.

“We won’t be able to persuade them. There has never been a case in the entire history of the Heathen Kings. At least that’s what Justine says.”

“If there ever has been a case, we wouldn’t hear about it because the organization wouldn’t exactly advertise it. But I’m pretty sure there have been exceptions. And I have a plan.”

Hope lights up in her eyes, but she banishes it a second later.

“What if the plan doesn’t work?”

I smirk, a diabolical solution to that problem already taking shape in my mind. “I’d gladly get into the details with you, but your sister will be back any minute now. Besides, there’s something else I’m dying to do.”

“What?”

“How about you and I go back to your place, get cleaned up, and then go to visit your father?”

CHAPTER XII

Eva

My jaw dropped all the way down to the floor when Micah asked to meet my father. I started blabbering, asking why now, how come he was even thinking about it, and what about Goldie?

Of course he had an answer to everything. He promised that, by the time we were cleaned up and ready to go, we’d have all the information we needed about Goldie’s health, and he was right.

We got the good news when we returned to the sanatorium later on. Justine and Annie waited for us there, surrounded by a whole army of guards, and they gave us a detailed report about how she was doing. Turns out that Romano had her medication changed so she wouldn’t get any better but be kept subdued, but that was the full extent of the evil he managed to work on her. Micah’s mother was found in worse shape, though. Sade had brought her to one of the Elders’ mansions, where she would receive the care she needed.

Micah was invited to go visit her.

My hand tightened around his when he didn’t offer a reply. He kept his eyes down and his face blank. At first, I blamed it on exhaustion. After all, all we got to do was take a long bath together, after which I tended to his wounds, but he refused to get any rest, and his beautiful face was still deathly pale from all the blood he’d lost. I’d barely convinced him to stop trying to fuck me, and he still had a hard-on. It does marvelous things to my heart to know that his lust for me is as insatiable as mine for him, but this was getting out of hand. He was still drained of blood and sleep deprived.

“Maybe later,” was all he said to Justine and Annie in the end before he turned to fasten the helmet on my head.

It wasn’t long before we reached my father’s pretty little house in New Jersey. I spent the entire time on the road worrying about Micah, but when he dismounted the bike and took off his helmet he looked like a prince, even with his hair plastered to his forehead. His complexion didn’t look any better, but he seemed to be feeling stronger.
