“Death will never do us part,” I reply. “Because I’ll fucking kill it.”

Epilogue

Eva

Three months later

No matter how hard Micah tried to persuade me, I couldn’t bring myself to come live at the Royales mansion. They had it deep-cleaned since that terrible night, and Justine moved back in after a few weeks, but that’s because she didn’t witness the actual mayhem, having been safely taken to the servants’ wing.

“You’re gonna have to get over it and move in eventually,” she says as she arranges fruit in a crystal bowl. Even though she’s basically the mistress of the house, old habits die hard and she just has to help Mrs. Jones. “You’re soon to be Duchess Royales. Living in this mansion is practically your duty. Besides, we’d be living together. How awesome is that?”

“Stop discriminating against my apartment. It’s perfectly fit to house a Duchess and a Duke,” I counter lightheartedly as I pour another drink and place it on the tray next to the others while Mrs. Jones scurries around to get the appetizers ready for the party, bellowing orders at the rest of the help.

“Not a Duchess and a Duke who fuck like sex addicts and terrorize their neighbors.” Justine winks, then pops a grape into her mouth.

No argument there. Santi moved out after a month or so. He basically got bullied out of his apartment.

“And be real Evita, there’s no way Micah is gonna let you live there forever,” Annie puts in as she adds whipped cream to the cookies, and then sucks some off her finger. “If the diamonds he keeps buying you are any indication, he’s determined to force a life of luxury on you. Besides, have you seen your street lately? There’s always an army of guards around, and those bikers?” She shudders. “It must be really fucked up for the entire neighborhood to have those guys around all the time. The one with the split tongue for example? He gives me the chills. So much that I thought I saw him slip out of Mireille’s bedroom at the sorority house the other night. How long until he stars in my nightmares?”

“I’m more worried about who stars in your daydreams,” I whisper, locking eyes with Justine over the kitchen island for a moment.

It’s not lost on us that our sweet Annie has been growing obsessed with Carlton Wilde. She even made fake accounts to slide in his DMs, and managed to gain access to one of those nasty chat groups where he shares porn stuff with other twisted assholes. I heard that his kinks make Micah’s look like a Christmas romance.

It’s also not lost on us that Carlton is the least happy about having to attend a double engagement party at the mansion today. He’s even more traditional than Chase Daytona when it comes to the ways of the Kings, and both the Royales brothers marrying the women of their choice instead of the ones arranged for them by the Elders pisses him off. He’s still bitter about the way Sade got rid of his cousin in order to be with Justine, and he was never a big fan of mine either.

I guess none of the Kings except Sade liked me much. I was too closed off for their liking, and the secrets that came to light one by one didn’t make things any better.

“There you are, fam,” a crystalline voice reaches us. I turn around in time to see Melody Sorbaine hurry toward me with open arms, looking positively royal in an elegant cream dress that goes wonderfully with the shiny chestnut waves of her hair. She smells divine, too.

“Finally, you’re back,” I exclaim as I hold her by the shoulders so I can look her up and down. “All that time in Paris did you good, I see. You look fabulous.”

“So do you,” she replies, retrieving her phone and holding it up so she can get us all in the frame. “All my sisters gather around. This is a big, big day, and I want those million dollar smiles.”

Justine and Annie lean into the picture with wide smiles, and Mel snaps a selfie that actually turns out to be great. We rarely ever have a pic we can all agree on posting. It goes right up on Mel’s IG with the caption, Two of my girls are getting engaged today, how amazingly awesome is that?

“Maybe we'll get a double wedding after all.” I swear Sade appeared out of thin air behind Justine, stealing an apple from her bowl.
