‘As many as I can. What takes up the most time is having to get on and off Duke to get my arrows back.’

‘Well, you’ve got me to help you now.’

‘Really?’

‘Yes.’ He gave her the arrows he was holding. ‘I’ll stand at one end, and the moment you’ve passed the first target, I’ll begin collecting them.’

‘Are you sure?’

‘One hundred per cent.’ He started towards the beginning of the course. ‘Go on,’ he called over his shoulder.

There was a whoop, then Duke shot past him.

Having spent so much time training to be an elite rower, James knew the number of hours it took to get to the top, and how little time Estelle had in comparison to practise her sport. He was used to being the centre of attention as the athlete, but watching her from the sidelines filled him with just as much satisfaction.

Estelle was a warrior princess. Genghis Khan would have wanted her on the frontline of any attack. And after the battle, in his bed.

Readjusting himself once more as his cock kept unsubtly reminding him of its presence, he pulled an arrow from the bullseye as Estelle finished another run.

‘You’re getting better,’ he called out as she cantered towards him.

She smiled. ‘I’m getting there.’

‘Is this how competitions are configured?’

‘Sometimes. They can also be on a circular track, and have targets placed at different angles.’

‘I can move some of them if you like?’

She hesitated, then swung herself to the ground. ‘Let me help.’

‘We could also put them at different heights?’ he suggested as they walked together across the field, Chester and Joy at their heels. ‘That would make it more difficult.’

She nodded. ‘The bales are thick enough to stand on their end.’

James had already worked out that morning and the bales weren’t particularly heavy in comparison, but after they’d finished resetting them, he was beginning to sweat.

‘Who needs a gym, eh?’ Estelle said with a grin.

‘A gym is cleaner and has showers.’

‘There’s a drinking trough over by the hedge if you fancy a wash?’

He shuddered. ‘No thanks.’

‘Maybe in the summer you might be persuaded to take a dip in the Foxbrooke?’

‘If you insist…’

In the pause that followed, he watched the double meaning of her words fall onto her like a ton of bricks.

‘I meant the river!’

He grinned. ‘Of course.’

She slapped his arm. ‘You’re such a pig.’

Her touch felt like foreplay.
