She nodded and sat.

He helped position her foot on his coat. ‘Got any Magnesium Sulphate?’

‘What?’

‘Epsom salts.’

‘No.’

‘Anything you want me to put in the bath?’

‘Hot water.’

‘Consider it done.’ He made a move towards the stairs.

‘Wait!’

‘Yes?’

‘Don’t go into any other room.’

‘I won’t.’

‘And don’t look at anything.’

He paused. ‘What can I look at?’

‘Er… The stairs, the bathroom door, the floor, the bath.’

‘Taps?’

‘They’re an integral part of the bath, so yes.’

‘Any other instructions?’

‘Not at the moment.’

Chuckling, he went up the stairs. A few moments later, Estelle heard the sound of running water.

Leaning forward, she carefully unwrapped her ankle and removed James’s phone. As she did, the lock screen lit up, displaying a photo of Chester and Joy. The dogs were sitting on the floor of the office and looking up at the camera as if in love with the person behind it. Estelle’s eyes prickled with conflicting emotion. Why did James have to be nice? It was far easier to hate him than change her mind about the person who’d been number one on her shit list since the age of thirteen.

Putting the phone down, she turned to her ankle. It was puffy, but she was still able to wiggle her toes. Glancing around the room, she noticed with horror the giant ‘U’ she’d made out of antique forks, then mounted on a piece of wood. She’d placed it in the middle of the coffee table, no longer hating James enough to give it to him. Where could she hide it?

Pushing onto her good foot, she hopped to the centre of the room and picked it up.

‘Is that for me?’

Whipping around, she lost her balance and toppled towards a sofa. Not wanting to get it dirty, she pivoted and collapsed in a heap on the floor, the U clutched to her chest.

‘Jesus!’ James crouched by her side, gazing at her with concern. ‘You okay?’ He held out his hand.

She passed him the fork U.

‘Thank you,’ he said with a huge smile. ‘My life is now complete.’

He held out his other hand, and she reluctantly took it, standing unsteadily.

‘Your bath is ready. I didn’t fill it all the way so you could adjust the temperature. Do you have any ice?’
