‘Huh?’ He paused. ‘Why would you think that?’

She shrugged. ‘Because you’ve been super grumpy and I know how much she means to you.’

‘Shush!’ He glanced at the closed bedroom door.

‘They’re both downstairs. We’re good.’ Sophia patted the bed. ‘Sit down. You’ve got plenty of time.’

He sat next to her and let out a sigh. ‘There’s a laundry list of reasons why I’ve upset her, but right now I think she’s ignoring me because she can’t cope with the fact I might actually be a human being.’

‘You could just tell her why you did what you did at Conqueror?’

‘No way.’

‘She might understand?’

‘I don’t want to test your theory. Right now, we just need to get through tonight without yelling at each other.’

‘You can do it.’

‘You sure you don’t want to come?’

Her head shook so fast, her hair whipped around her face.

‘I’ll take that as a maybe?’

‘It’s a “definitely not”. You know I’m only good with people if they’ve been buried for five hundred years.’ She shuddered. ‘And by the sound of it, the Foxbrookes are all so posh and loud and confident and—just no.’

‘Mum and Dad are loud and confident.’

‘Yes, but I’m used to them.’ She picked up a dark navy suit. ‘Wear this one.’

‘Okay.’ He stood. ‘Tie?’

‘Probably, yes. Councillors are usually pretty traditional.’

He changed, then frowned at himself in the mirror again.

‘I think she really likes you.’

James didn’t reply.

‘Estelle.’

He ran a hand through his hair. ‘As long as you qualify that with “against her will”, then you might be right.’

‘What are you talking about? You’re not forcing her to like you, you’re just showing her the real you.’

He turned to face her. ‘She’s so desperate to dislike me, she asked me to stop wearing my aftershave because she claims she’s allergic to it.’

‘Maybe she is?’

‘One hundred per cent not. She breathes in deeper when I’m close.’

Sophia squealed with delight and clapped her hands. ‘This is wonderful!’

James rolled his eyes. ‘She acts like I’ve laced it with pheromones to con her into liking me.’

‘Did you?’
