I could work from home? Say my ankle’s worse?

You’ll have to see him at some point.

But I don’t know what to say!

What would Eveline do if she were you?

Pray? Be honest with James about how I feel?

And are you going to do either of those things?

Yeah, right.

Coward.

Shut up.

Estelle sang Spice Girls songs all the way back to the livery, through brushing Duke down, and up to the point she got back into her house to find Elyse awake and in the living room watching television.

Elyse muted the volume. ‘How did it go last night?’

Estelle’s mind instantly replayed James holding her up against the wall, her legs locked around his waist. Had he been like that with Elyse?

‘Um, well, I think. But that doesn’t mean anything. We have to wait for the committee to meet and vote.’

‘Okay.’ Elyse lapsed into silence, her eyes unfocused.

Estelle braced herself for what might be coming next.

‘How was James?’

‘Same old, same old,’ she replied with breezy enthusiasm. ‘I’m going to make coffee. Want one?’

Elyse got up. ‘Yes, please. I’ll help.’

She followed Estelle through into the kitchen, then leaned against the countertop, staring once more into the middle distance.

‘Could you grab a couple of mugs?’

‘Oh! Yeah.’ Elyse opened a cupboard and took two out. ‘Did James say anything about me last night?’

Estelle shook her head. No, he was too busy calling me ‘Star’ and tongue-fucking my mouth.

‘Oh.’

Estelle’s phone buzzed, and she grabbed it from her back pocket.

‘Is it him?’

‘No… It’s my mate, Finn. He’s—’ Single and alright looking if you like grumpy men with beards… Estelle smiled. ‘He’s asking if I want to go to the pub later. It’s quiz night.’

‘Are you going?’

‘Do you want to come too?’

Elyse’s cheeks coloured. ‘Me?’

‘Yeah. I think you need to get out more. And Finn’s single.’
