James: Why not?

Estelle: I’m too competitive

James: Not a bad thing

Estelle: I get shouty and argumentative

James: Strange. You’re normally so quiet and reserved

Estelle grinned, her tummy flip-flopping.

Estelle: But tonight, Finn has let Elyse and me join the Beardy Boys

James: How well you must fit in

Estelle paused, her thumbs over the screen, then tapped out a message before she could stop herself.

Estelle: Did you want to go out for a drink with me for professional reasons?

James: No

‘Stelle! What are you doing?’ Finn hissed behind her.

She jumped, her hand flying to her chest. ‘Jesus Christ, Finn! You scared the crap out of me! I was just going for a wee.’

‘Bollocks were you. You can’t just fuck off and leave me with Elyse. You know I’m shit at small talk.’

‘Do you like her?’

Finn ran his hands through his hair, leaving it sticking up in all directions. ‘Stelle, I don’t know her.’

‘But do you fancy her?’

He shrugged. ‘I dunno.’

‘Finn! She’s really pretty!’

‘So what? You’re stunning, but I don’t fancy you.’

She growled at him. ‘I thought this was a sure thing.’

‘What about Tommy? Ryan? They’re single.’

‘Are you nuts? Elyse likes slick city boys, not lumberbears.’

Finn snorted. ‘Lumberbears?’

‘You know what I mean. Stick a couple of grizzlies in plaid shirts, cover them in tattoos and you’ve got Yogi and Boo-Boo over there. I thought she was going to shit herself when they stood up.’

‘So why did you run off?’

‘Because I was giving you room to make your move!’

‘Not messaging lover-boy?’

She hesitated, and Finn raised an eyebrow.

‘He asked me out for a drink.’
