She frowned as if trying to place the name with someone she knew, then her cheeks darkened and she shook her head.

James internally fist-pumped. Foxbrooke’s hottest yoga instructor was no longer doing a downward dog rent-free in Estelle’s mind.

‘Or one of the Spice Girls?’

‘I don’t know them.’

‘It doesn’t matter. Who would you rather be having dinner with right now, out of anyone who’s ever lived or been imagined? Boudicca? Joan of Arc? Xena: Warrior Princess?’

Estelle hesitated and something resembling sadness passed across her face.

‘It’s not that I would rather be with this person…’

James’s hackles rose. There was someone else in her life?

‘But I would do anything to sit down with them again.’

He forced his tone to remain level. ‘Who?’

‘Alexis.’

James thought about all the people he’d met or heard about since moving to Somerset. Alexis was not someone he’d come across.

‘She ran the livery before I took it over. She died eleven years ago.’

Before he could stop himself, he breathed a sigh of relief that his rival was not only a platonic friend but also dead.

Estelle frowned. ‘Does that make you happy?’

Fuck. He held up his hands in a gesture of surrender. ‘No. I’m sorry. I thought…’ He let out a breath. ‘I was jealous.’

Both her eyebrows raised. ‘You? The mighty Hunter-Savage? Jealous?’

Embarrassment prickled the back of his neck. ‘It has happened once or twice.’

Estelle smiled. ‘Well, there’s no need. And if Alexis were still alive, she would have adored you.’

‘She was obviously a woman of good taste.’

‘Alexis was an absolute dragon. If I had even half of her fire, I wouldn’t have missed when I shot that arrow at you.’

He shifted in his chair as his dick, which up until that moment had been extremely happy, shrivelled a little.

‘What happened to it, by the way?’ she asked. ‘The arrow?’

‘It’s in one of the drawers in my bedroom.’

‘You kept it?’

He nodded. ‘It’s part of the holy trinity of gifts.’

‘Huh?’

‘A fur Q, a fork U, and an arrow that missed my balls by a couple of inches. Three different ways you’ve expressed your feelings for me. I’m truly blessed.’

She giggled. ‘I’m sorry.’

He grinned. ‘No, you’re not.’
