Carly joined her. ‘I think he’s going to kill you,’ she said out of the corner of her mouth.

Estelle flashed her a grin. ‘Yeah, but totally worth it.’

Every person around them seemed to be holding up a phone, and there were excited cries of ‘It’s the Spice Cadets!’ as people clocked who James was driving.

Carly giggled. ‘I think this is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. Did he really sell the Ferrari for that? And if so, why?’

‘I’m not sure. I’ll ask him later,’ Estelle replied, then broke off to yell to the crowds once more. ‘Incoming pop stars! Stand clear of the moving motor vehicle!’

‘Do you think you could possibly go a little faster?’ James called from behind them.

Estelle ground to a halt. ‘What was that? I couldn’t quite hear you.’

James growled again, then head-butted the centre of the steering wheel, sounding the horn.

‘You’re wicked,’ Carly hissed.

Estelle carried on walking. ‘What can I say? I’m an evil genius.’

Carly glanced over her shoulder. ‘As soon as we get to the main stage, I’d leg it if I were you. I think he’s either going to strangle or spank you.’

A rush of heat shot through Estelle’s body. It didn’t matter that James was leaving Foxbrooke, or that she’d told him nothing would ever happen between them. She still wanted him with a visceral intensity that knocked out her breath. But she wanted to talk to him when the festival was over. When there was nothing to distract them or drag one of them away.

‘Good idea. I’ll peel off just before we get there. UberGraft finish their set at ten-thirty, right?’

‘Yep, and that allows for encores. We should have the site clear within an hour and a half, and anyone camping back in their field.’

‘How many of the staff do you think could get to the main stage at midnight? I’d like to make a speech to say thank you.’

‘Pretty much everyone except for a skeleton security detail on the main entry and exit points.’

‘And I suppose by that time we won’t need so many extra bodies patrolling the fence, either.’

Carly shook her head. ‘We’ve only had a handful of people try and get through today. I think word’s got out about the unofficial guards and that’s put people off trying.’

‘How many people got in using Summer’s fake passes?’

‘Last count was nearly a thousand, but their average spend’s been eighty quid, so we’ve actually made a ton of money off them. Plus, they’ve been posting so much positive content to social media that #FoxbrookeFestival has been trending for the past twenty-four hours.’

‘Holy shit! That’s amazing!’

‘It really is. I haven’t had a chance to fill you in on it all, but you’ll get a full breakdown by the end of next week with all the stats.’

‘And how’s Summer getting on? I haven’t seen her at all.’

‘She’s been meeting and greeting groups in the manor every hour since Friday lunchtime. I put Zeke in charge of coordinating everyone to make sure no-one got missed. Honestly, Estelle, she’s been incredible. Zeke says she hasn’t stopped smiling and making everyone feel special.’

‘Shit. She must be exhausted. I can’t imagine anything worse than having to be nice to strangers all day.’

Carly laughed. ‘What do you think you’ve been doing for the last few months?’

Estelle shrugged. ‘Yeah, but you’re my friends now. It’s easy.’

Carly put her arm around Estelle’s shoulder and gave her a squeeze. ‘You’ve been the best boss ever. I’m going to miss you.’

‘You too,’ Estelle managed, even though her throat was tightening. They were nearly at the main stage. ‘Can you put the call out to get everyone together at midnight? I’m going to take your advice and do a runner.’

‘Will do.’
