She smiled, her heart full. ‘You’re sexier now I know you’re a good guy.’

He gazed at her, a look of utter contentment on his face. ‘You know, I’ve been in Foxbrooke over a year now.’

Estelle thought back to everything that had happened since then. It seemed like a lifetime ago.

‘I remember the first time I ever met you. You called me “Foxy lady”.’

‘Which, of course, you are. And you told me I had to stay away from your family if I knew what was good for me.’

She smirked. ‘And look how that commandment turned out.’

James stopped and pulled her to him. Lowering his head, he grazed her lips with a kiss.

‘I think it’s all worked out perfectly,’ he murmured. ‘The perfect happy ending for ninety-nine per cent perfect people.’

‘What’s the one per cent we’re missing?’

‘I always like to give myself room for improvement.’

‘You could make more of an effort to pretend to like the Spice Girls?’

He kissed her again. ‘I’ll see what I can do.’

‘So, now we’ve had our happy ending, what happens next?’

He smiled. ‘We have some more. Starting with tonight. How about we go home, and I give you a massage followed by multiple happy endings?’

She wrapped her arms around the back of his neck. ‘Sounds perfect.’

‘Just like you.’

Suddenly, James lifted her into his arms.

‘What are you doing?’

‘Reminding the residents of Foxbrooke that I am the strongest, most virile, and best boyfriend ever to walk the earth.’

She giggled. ‘And modest with it. You do know there’s no-one about to see you?’

‘Dammit,’ he replied, striding faster towards the manor’s gates. ‘I’ll have to do a lap of the high street.’ He smirked. ‘And anyway, I’m in practice for Austenfest. If there’s going to be a “carrying a beautiful woman through the countryside” race, then I’m intending to win it.’

‘Do you always have to win?’

He pulled a face. ‘Of course.’ His features softened. ‘Although I’m with Estelle Foxbrooke, so I’ve won already. Nothing can top that.’ His gaze darkened. ‘And “winning” doesn’t always mean I come first…’

She smothered her smile. ‘I don’t understand.’

Pulling a set of keys from his pocket, he zapped the car unlocked. ‘Give me fifteen minutes to get us home and I’ll show you exactly what I mean.’

She sighed happily. ‘Sounds like a plan.’
