“True.” I wipe a drip of water from the copper spout. “Maybe I’m going about it wrong. Maybe I’m trying to force something that should happen naturally.”

“Were you forcing Dash into marriage?”

“Not that I’m aware of. He wanted it as much as I did. We talked about our future a lot.”

Easton’s phone dings with a text. He lifts a finger and reads the screen. “Shit,” he says as if he forgot something.

“What?”

“Everleigh has been trying to reach you.”

“Where is my phone?” Oh, yeah. My nightstand still. Geez, I’m a wreck today. I race to get it, but Easton stops me from entering the hallway.

“What are you doing?”

“I was supposed to ask you something. Convince you, really. Everleigh’s texts will show what that is, I’m sure, so I want to prepare you.”

Heat prickles my neck. “Prepare me for what?” I’m seconds from shoving him out of the way.

He scratches his neck. “I guess, I’ll just say it. Everleigh wants me to bring you to the farm where you can relax for a while and feel safe.”

“I can’t.”

“I’m supposed to convince you.”

“Well, I can’t. My parents won’t be back for a week. They rely on me to make sure the office is open and closed properly. You can’t trust realtors to remember to come back to the office if they’re out showing properties.”

Tim’s agency sells homes, condos and such, and corporate real-estate. The agents come and go a lot. Someone needs to make sure the place gets locked up properly at night.

Another text dings on Easton’s phone.

While he reads it, I sneak past him and read my many texts from Everleigh and my mom.

I reply to each with a sorry and I didn’t have my phone. My mom is in a different time zone in Europe. I doubt she’ll get this. I didn’t tell her what happened because I didn’t want her to worry. She’s finally living the life she’d always dreamed of. Far be it from me to ruin her romantic escape with the man of her dreams.

According to my texts, Everleigh contacted her to get her in on the plan to get me here. Mom was shocked that I hadn’t called her and upset, rightly so. Everleigh apologized to me for telling her when I hadn’t had the chance yet. I’m not mad. I could never be mad at Everleigh. It just complicates things.

I quickly explain in a long text to my mom that I’m fine. I’m with Easton, and I didn’t want her to worry.

One of Mom’s texts urged me to please go to the farm and that Vanessa would make sure the business was opened and closed properly. Vanessa is new and doesn’t have many clients, so she has a lot of free time. She also loves to help. I guess I could trust her to do what I’ve been doing.

The last text Everleigh sent said she’d come here if I wasn’t up for staying at the farm. Well, we can’t have that. This seems like a big deal for nothing. Not nothing, but I’m fine. The police said they’d search for the guy but that it’s unlikely they’ll find him without more than I was able to tell them. I couldn’t even leave a description of his face. He didn’t steal from me, either so I’m not sure what charges they would press. Attempted kidnapping?

A memory tugs at my brain.

“That is a serious face.” Easton stands near my bed, watching me.

I didn’t even hear him come in. I blink at him, the memory haunting my thoughts.

“What is it?”

“It’s probably nothing.”

“It’s never nothing with you,” he teases.

“You’re going to say I’m paranoid.” I walk to the second bedroom and get my suitcase from the closet.

“You’re coming?” He perks up. “That was much easier than I thought.”
