“What?” His forehead crinkled as he narrowed his gaze. “We don’t even know this guy.”

“He’s a colleague, Gavin.” She rolled her eyes heavenward. “You may have forgotten, but I am an adult, and I can have dinner with anyone I want.”

“Sam and I can join you. Vet the guy.”

Sam placed a hand on her husband’s arm. “Your sister is going on a date, Gavin. She doesn’t want us tagging along.”

“It’s not a date.”

“Then it’s settled. We’ll join you.”

“No. We won’t.” Sam laughed. “You should hear yourself. How would you have felt if I had a big brother who had wanted to check you out?”

“It’s not the same.”

“Isn’t it?”

“She’s a target. Anyone who knows who our father is will want to get into her good graces.” As many times as she’d heard this lecture, she might as well be living in the movie Groundhog Day, reliving the same conversation again and again.

Tapping her fingers on the edge of the sofa, she looked up at Gavin again. “Malachi is completely unaware of anything related to our father.”

“How can you possibly know that?”

“Trust me. Besides, like I said, this is not a date. We’ll probably talk about missing bear cubs through the entire meal.”

“Missing cubs?” Gavin’s eyebrows shot up.

“Yeah.” Cate drew out the word.

“One of our tech guys mentioned someone trying to sell black bear cubs on the dark web.”

“What was he doing on the dark web?”

“I didn’t ask. I’m sure it had to do with one of our cases. He was in a forum for buying and selling exotic species.”

Sam’s brow crinkled. “Nothing exotic about bears.”

That could be the reason it caught his attention and seemed strange to him.

Cate made eye contact with Samantha. “Did my goofy brother mention anything about this to you before now?”

“Not a word.” Sam slowly shook her head.

“You didn’t say anything sooner because?”

“Didn’t correlate it with either of you. It was a random conversation with one of my employees. And I doubt it has anything to do with your missing cubs.”

“Are you aware of whether the individual selling them is in Pennsylvania?” Sam asked.

“He didn’t say.”

Cate sighed. “Do you think it’s possible for you to get your guy to find out more? If the cubs are here, the game cops could set up an undercover buy and get the cubs back and the perpetrators arrested.”

“I’ll see what I can find out.”

“In the meantime, I better get going if I’m going to meet Malachi in time.”

“Be careful driving,” Sam said.
