I shiver as a smile covers my face. “Hey.”

“Do you miss me?” Cole’s voice is husky, sending a shiver down my spine.

“Absolutely.” Everything else disappears when I hear his voice. “I’m glad you called.”

“Really?”

“Of course.” I march toward the main entrance as the paparazzi yell at whoever shows up behind us. “I hate that we can’t talk out in the open.”

“I was afraid you’d think I was clingy, but I wanted to hear your voice.”

Tears sting my eyes as the doorman opens the black-plated glass door that hides the interior from any passersby. “That’s so sweet. I’m glad you called.” The door shuts behind me. “I’m headed to a recognition dinner for my boss. He donated to a hospital to build on a new cancer wing.”

“Shit. All I did was rescue a kitten from a tree. I can’t compete with that.”

The bottom floor is pure opulence–dark furniture, golden fixtures, white marble floors, and tile. I couldn’t afford to rent a room here for an hour, let alone an entire night. Not that they rent by the hour unless it’s to a billionaire or a politician.

“Was the kitten scared and adorable?” I smile as I walk to the corner of a sitting area so I can have more privacy. Surely, Mr. Burke won’t set up an appointment for the next five minutes. And if he does, he’ll forgive me.

“Yes, of course.”

“Were you sexy while climbing the ladder?”

“Of course. How could I not be?”

“Then you win, hands down.”

“Awesome.’ His chuckle vibrates my ear, and my entire body buzzes.

“I told my boss about us.”

“Really?”

A well-dressed older couple sits across from each other at a small white linen-covered table. They’re deep in conversation as the woman waves her hand in the air. The 4-karat diamond ring flashes under the chandelier.

“Yes. It’s not like he knows my brothers. And I wanted to ask him how he and his wife made their marriage last? No one knows he’s married because his wife doesn’t want to be in the spotlight.”

“Are you asking me to marry you? I don’t have my dress picked out, and you’re 2 ½ hours away.”

I roll my eyes as I fall a little harder for him. “Stop.”

“I’m teasing.” The laughter slowly leaves his voice. “So, what did he say?”

I lean against the wall and sigh, “He thinks we have what it takes.”

“I see. And what do you think?” His voice holds a slight hint of apprehension.

“I think he’s right.” I straighten as a man carrying a tray travels from behind a pole toward the waiting area. “What days do you have off this week?”

“Wednesday and Thursday.”

“Are you doing anything?” The waiter offers me champagne from his black tray. I shake my head, sending him on to the next guest.

“No. Nothing I can’t get out of.”

“Would you be willing to come and see me? I don’t have off until the weekend, so if I came back home to see you, it would only be a few hours.”

“I would love to. I’ll drive up Wednesday night. Early.” The huskiness in his voice causes my nips to tighten. My heart pangs in my chest at the speed with which he agrees. “I’d come up on Tuesday night, but I don’t get off until midnight.”
