“Well, where is she? Where is the little bitch?”

“I’m here,” she said quietly, stepping fully into the moonlight.

Mist crept slowly up the bank from the river, curling around her feet like a comforting hand and she breathed a sigh of relief. Marsh was in place.

“You better get your ass up here. You’re in enough trouble already.”

“I’m not coming up there. I’m never entering that house again.”

Harold’s face went red with rage. He turned to yell at Jimmy, but Jimmy had already slipped back down the steps. He saluted to her from the bottom and disappeared around the corner of the house. So far, so good.

“Don’t make me come get you, girl,” Harold snapped.

“I told you I’m not coming back.”

“Then why are you here? Looking for some kinda handout?”

“No. I came to tell you I wasn’t coming back. There’s no need to try and hunt me down in the swamp.”

Harold was many things, but he wasn’t entirely stupid. His gaze immediately fixed on her face.

“You don’t like that, huh? Maybe I’ll expand the search even more, see how much destruction I can cause. Bet I could even get a logging permit.”

Thorn growled, but hopefully it had been too quiet for Harold to hear.

“You don’t need to do that,” she said quickly. “I’m not going to tell anyone what you’re doing.”

His eyes narrowed, his face turning crimson as he finally stalked down the steps towards her. Her heart was thudding against her ribs so hard she felt sick, but she stayed in position. Behind him, a shadowy figure slipped through the open door.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean? Are you trying to threaten me, girl?”

“Yes. I know about your meth lab. I know what you and Elmer did to that dealer. As long as you stay away from me, I’ll be the only one who knows.”

He laughed.

“Once you’re back in my house, you won’t be able to tell anyone anything. Even if you tried, it’s not like anyone is gonna believe some two bit little tramp’s word over mine.”

“They’ll find the body.”

He laughed again.

“No they won’t. Elmer took care of that. You’ll never find any evidence about the other business either.”

“That’s far enough,” she said as he reached for her, proud of how calm she sounded, but he only sneered.

“Stupid bitch. Who’s going to stop me?”

“I will.”

Thorn stepped out from under the trees, mist swirling around his powerful form and his horns gleaming in the moonlight. Harold actually paled for a moment before he recovered his composure.

“Your kind ain’t welcome here. Get the fuck off my property right now.”

“No.” Thorn crossed his massive arms across his chest, looking as immovable as a mountain. “Not until you promise to let her go.”

Harold was practically incandescent with anger.

“Who the fuck do you think you are? She’s my goddamn property. Mine. You’ll be lucky if I don’t shoot you where you stand. Now get off of my land.”
