Betsy grinned and took Clary’s hand. “Thank you, and please thank Movement’s CEO for me.”

“I will definitely do that.”

The woman gave her another hug. “Thank you. God bless you.” She gave Seth a small smile. “Have a blessed Christmas,” she said and headed off.

Clary turned to Seth. “Should I have introduced you?”

Seth gave her a look of horror.

“Yeah. That was what I thought.” Clary wrapped her arms around Seth and gave him a tight squeeze, the way Betsy did to her. “Betsy Cladding says thank you for making the refunds possible.” Clary rolled onto the balls of her feet and gave him a peck on the lips. “I’m thankful too.”

“I told you he didn’t need us here.”

Of course Elton had to ruin the moment.

CHAPTER 4

Clary pulled away from Seth at the sound of Elton’s voice and turned to find Zane and Elton standing behind her. “What are you guys doing here? Aren’t you getting shoes?” The shoe aisle was pretty far away from the school supplies aisle.

Had they seen Betsy and gotten worried about Seth?

Then she noticed the silent exchanges between Zane and Seth.

“What’s going on?” Elton asked before she could.

“Nothing,” Seth said. “I just thought Zane might join us.” He cocked his head to the side. “You can keep on shopping,” he said to Elton.

“It’s okay,” Clary said. “Elton can join us too.” She wasn’t sure what was going on. Was Seth struggling more than he was revealing? Regardless, there was no need to send Elton away.

“He has a list of things to buy,” Seth said.

Zane nodded. “I’ll stay with them.”

Elton rolled his eyes. “Fine.”

Did Seth and Zane not realize how incredibly rude they were being to Elton? “I’ll go with Elton, then,” she said.

“No,” Seth and Zane said at the same time.

Elton poked his tongue into his cheek, the way Seth always did when he was frustrated. “You guys should’ve just let me go to work.”

“This isn’t about you,” Zane said.

Clary turned to Seth. “I really don’t mind waiting in the car.” She took out her phone from the bag. “I’ll just send them the list of—”

Seth pushed down her hand. “It isn’t that.” He shared another looked with Zane.

“Okay.” Clary put her hands on the cart handle. “You guys can keep eyeing each other. I’m getting on with the shopping.”

Seth gently hooked his hand under her elbow to stop her. “I thought I saw Pete Laker.”

Zane scanned the area. “You should’ve said so in the text. I could’ve checked the store.”

“I was going to, but I got distracted.”

“Distracted,” Zane repeated in a bored, are-you-serious tone.

“Didn’t you see what they were doing when we got here?” Elton asked.
