“My intentions.”

“Seth’s rich.”

“He is, but he isn’t Eolenfeld rich.” Clary rested her hip against the island counter. “Just think over your reasoning for a bit. If I’m really after the money, why don’t I just marry an Eolenfeld? Mr. E likes me, so anyone—even Hugh—would jump at the chance to marry me to get into Mr. E’s good books.”

“Because they’re all idiots.”

Clary nodded. “And you think Seth and I might as well be Romeo and Juliet.”

“Yes.”

“So you’d like to force us to our deaths.”

Elton’s brows drew together. “Don’t put words in my mouth.”

“Romeo and Juliet died because their families didn’t want them to be together. It was a plot that went wrong, but they wouldn’t have had to do that if their families didn’t try to keep them apart.”

“Are you threatening me?”

“I’m genuinely asking: is that what you want?”

Elton glared back at her.

“Let’s think some more. You’re a doctor. You should be logical,” she said and continued before Elton could cut in with an argument. “Let’s say Seth’s and my relationship is doomed to fail.”

“It is. You’re just going to hurt him in the end.”

“So you decided it’d be better for you to hurt Seth now?” She arched a brow and waited.

Elton’s brows twitched. “You’re just trying to twist my words. The truth is the truth. You’re going to leave him. The truth might hurt, but it’s the truth.”

“Truth is one thing, but until it actually happens, it’s only your assumption or prediction. That can’t be counted as the truth.”

“I could say the same about Christianity.”

“Jesus came and died for us. His existence is a fact that even atheists admit.”

“Maybe he was just a man who angered the wrong people and died for that.”

“And that’s why there are still demonstrations of His power.” She beamed and held her hand up. All that was left of the deep cut in her hand was a faint scar. “Like my hand. You were so sure my nerves were damaged.”

“Because you said there was numbness in your fingers.”

“And I might’ve lied,” she said what he hadn’t, which she supposed was Elton being nice.

Which meant the food had kind of worked.

“Since you hate me that much and are so sure that I’ll leave,” Clary said, “why don’t you leave the hurting part to me? Then you won’t have to become his enemy.”

“Seth won’t see me as an enemy because of you.”

“It’s not a competition.”

“Why not?” Elton’s smug look returned. “Don’t you want him to put you first? Don’t you want him to worship the ground you walk on? When it comes to it, he’ll never choose you. He’ll choose us.”

Clary blew out a breath.

“See? You do care that he can’t put you first.”
