Seth poked his tongue into his cheek.

“Does this have anything to do with Holly accusing Mr. E of sending people to watch her?”

Seth’s brows rose.

“Mr. E told me. Holly wrote him a really long letter, accusing him of doing that. Mr. E said he never did.”

Seth stretched his neck to the side. “I’ve seen Holly gather the servants and blow up at them for snitching on her to Edward Eolenfeld.”

“Do you seriously think you could believe her? Especially when she was off her meds?”

Seth seemed to consider her words for a moment.

“Mr. E says that Holly appeared in the news and magazines enough for him to know that she was alive and well, so there was no need for him to spy on her.”

“And you believe him just because he said so?”

Clary pulled out the chair and sat. “I get you had a horrible time with Holly, and that Mr. E let you guys down by not doing anything to help, but …” She tipped her head to the side as her gaze roamed across his face. “You seem to have a really strong distrust of Mr. E. Why?”

Sighing, Seth shrugged a shoulder. “Maybe because a lot of times, when justifying her punishments, she’d preface it with ‘your grandfather would say,’ then throw out sayings or Bible quotations to prove we were horrible brats.”

“Oh.” Clary blew out a breath. “Isn’t it strange how two people can know the same person yet experience such drastically different aspects of that very person?”

“I know for certain that Edward Eolenfeld hires private investigators. One of them found me at my new placement and spoke to me after Winnie’s disappearance.”

“I know for certain that Grandma Moretti would kill Mr. E if he did anything like that to me.”

“They have done things behind your back. We’re staying in one of the secrets.”

“Yes, but—” Clary frowned. “One of the secrets?”

Seth twisted his lower jaw to the side.

“You’re keeping a secret from me for Mr. E?”

“May Eolenfeld left you some money and jewelry too, so Edward wanted me to sign a prenup.”

“A prenup? We’re not even engaged, and—” She shook her head. “Gosh. So many things are going through my mind and I can’t decide which one to get angry at first.”

Seth laughed, but quickly cleared his throat when she glared at him. “Are you angry with me?”

“Did you sign the prenup?”

“No, but I told him I would. And I will when—”

“Then I won’t marry you.”

Seth blinked.

“Marriage is forever. To me, that is. When I get married, if things don’t work out, we fix it.”

“I don’t think Edward would agree with that.”

“Why? I’m sure you have more money than I do anyway.”

That, for whatever reason, made Seth smile.

“How much did Mrs. E leave me?”
