“Zane, but only because I asked what they wanted.” She leaned over and gave him a peck on the cheek. “Why do you look so annoyed?”

“I’m not annoyed.” Seth blew out a breath. Was he? “I never imagined I’d wake up to this.”

“What?” She poured the whipped-up eggs into the skillet. “Your brothers ordering the type of eggs they want?”

“The house smelling like a bakery. Seeing my brothers gathered in the kitchen, which” —he put a hand on her back— “is more of a feat than you realize.”

She arched a brow.

“Holly was a horrible cook.” Their adoptive mother used to come up with the weirdest recipes, and they would have to eat every single crumb, no matter how disgusting it was.

And it often was.

“Let’s just say we learned to stay as far away from the kitchen as possible.”

“Oliver didn’t get the memo?”

Seth gave her a wry smile. “He’s trusting.”

She nodded slowly. “Then what’s upsetting you?”

“Nothing.”

“You were frowning the whole time, and you told Aldric to get out.”

“I thought you might want some space.” He shrugged a shoulder. “And I don’t like them creating trouble for you.” He scanned the kitchen. “What time did you get up to prepare all this?”

She waved it off. “I thought I’d prepare the ingredients we need for dinner. Then since I was done, might as well whip up some breakfast.”

“We’ve survived on cereal. You don’t have to do all this.”

“I enjoy cooking.” She transferred the scrambled eggs onto another plate, then set the skillet down and faced him. “I promise that if I don’t feel like cooking, I won’t. Okay?”

He nodded.

She glanced over at her phone when it buzzed again.

“I think it’s Edward Eolenfeld.” That would explain Zane’s reaction when he saw Clary’s phone. “Do you want me to check if it’s important?”

She shook her head. “They’ll call if it’s anything important. It’s probably Grandma Moretti sending me more awesome views from her room. Oh. And Pete Laker texted me again.”

“About that …” He ran his hand through his hair. “Zane said he saw Pete Laker outside our apartment building after the bomb went off.”

Clary frowned.

Seth opened his mouth, then shut it.

“What is it?”

“Do you think Edward Eolenfeld sent him to monitor us?”

“No way.”

Seth took the plates from Clary. “What did Pete tell you?”

She blew out a breath. “I can’t remember. Something lame.” The corners of her lips curled back as she gave a casual wave of her hand. “Forget about him. Let’s eat. I’m starving.”
