He brushed his thumb across her cheek. “Just promise you’ll never tell me to walk away from you when you’re in danger.”

“You could’ve died, Seth.”

“You stepped in front of a gun for me, too.”

Her brows twitched.

“Did you forget?” That was minutes after they’d first met. “You should never let the assailant take you to a secondary location.” Clary had refused to let him leave with the gunman because of something a man once said on Oprah’s talk show.

“Oh, right. I saved your life back then.”

His lips curled.

“The man wasn’t going to shoot,” she said.

“You don’t know that.”

“Was that why you started being nice to me?” Her eyes slid to the side. “Wait. Did you start being nice to me then?”

“That was when I knew you were crazy.”

She grinned and dropped her gaze. “I didn’t want you to stay with me.” She lifted her chin. “But …” She licked her lips. “I don’t know how to put into words everything I felt.” She put a hand on his chest. “Thank you, and I love you.”

He pressed his hand over hers. “That’s enough.” He gave her another peck on the forehead.

She reached into the pocket of her jacket and pulled out her phone. After tapping on the screen, she turned it to him.

It was her text conversation with Grandma Moretti. Clary had wished her a blessed Christmas in one message. Then, in the last message she sent, she asked about her things and if Grandma Moretti could have them sent to San Francisco.

Seth grinned. “So you’re staying.”

“Maybe not here, because you’re right. It is too hard. Now that I’m not occupied with things at work, being here is difficult.”

“But you’ll stay in San Francisco.”

She nodded and squeaked when Seth wrapped his arms around her and pulled her tight against him, lifting her off the floor. “Merry Christmas.”

And he prayed it would be the first of many, many Christmases.

“Why is it so dark … oh. Nice.”

Seth put Clary back down and looked over at Oliver.

“I’m sorry to interrupt,” Oliver said to Seth. “You left your phone on the coffee table, and it’s been ringing non-stop. Your assistant’s been trying to reach you.”

Seth frowned. Tony had never done that before. “Thanks.” He took the phone from Oliver, then scanned through the text messages his assistant had sent him.

“Do you need to go into work?” Clary asked.

Seth ran his tongue under his teeth. He’d told Clary he would take her out on a date, but the cyber-attack on Movement’s system might be serious.

“I don’t mind,” Clary added. “We can go out another time.”

“No.” He was done putting off their date. If he’d learned anything over the past week, it was to stop putting things off. It was already a miracle that they were both still alive, and he wasn’t going to spend today at the office.

Get the IT team and handle it. Seth typed and sent the message.

His assistant’s reply was immediate. On it.
