Seth already had the information. Perhaps they could get more information from that end.

“You told Clary you’d tell her everything when she met you.” Andrea pursed her lips. “But you’re not holding up your end of the deal.”

Clary nodded.

“How can you expect us to continue trusting you?” Andrea paused and waited while Pete appeared to consider what she’d said.

“I’m an ex-detective, so I know how serious this is. I want to keep Clary safe, but I can’t do that without your help.”

For the first time since hiring Andrea, Clary felt bad. Because SFPD lost quite a talent.

The Andrea sitting next to her wasn’t the Andrea Clary had come to know. The only sign of that Andrea was the whimsical and colorful nail stickers on her fingers.

“I won’t tell anyone who your client is.”

Andrea didn’t have to. Clary would.

“Help me keep Clary safe.”

Clary reminded herself to tell Andrea that she could try out for a career in Hollywood.

“I was going to tell you,” Pete said to her. “But at the last minute, my client wasn’t confident that I could get through to you. My client thinks you’ll stand by the Andersons, the way everyone else did back then.”

Clary didn’t actually need Pete to tell her who his client was now. She was sure it was Jimmy. Who else could it be? “Then I guess we have nothing else to talk about.”

“They are a horribly cunning bunch, Miss Fiore.”

Clary sucked in a breath. “You keep making accusations without substantiating them. You are an ex-detective. Surely you know how this situation looks to me.”

“All of them refused to speak with the police. Did you know that? They all insisted they were in bed and knew nothing. My client can testify otherwise.” Pete shook his head. “It’s not safe for you to let them stay with you.”

“You’ve been watching me.”

“You’re in danger, Miss Fiore.”

From Pete, perhaps. Maybe even from Pete’s client.

But not from Seth and his brothers.

Clary almost got up. She was done with this conversation. She had enough to surmise who had hired Pete.

But Andrea suddenly continued, “If your client doesn’t trust us, then let him speak with me.”

“That’s not possible.”

“Then I guess we have nothing else to say.” Andrea looked over at her and Clary stood.

They didn’t say another word until they were back in the car.

“That was a waste of time,” Andrea said.

“I wouldn’t say so, Hannah.”

Andrea laughed. “I don’t know why, but I had this ominous feeling when I realized you were going to say my name. So I just gave my mother’s name.”

“I guess it’s good that he doesn’t have too much information on you.”

“I doubt he cares. He’s only concerned about the Andersons and you.” Andrea started the car. “But we still don’t know who his client is.”
