But she had to know.

So, unwillingly, she turned back to Holly.

“Olly was holding onto Winnie, God knows why. She must’ve been annoyed, because she picked up a rock and smashed it against his head.”

That would explain why Seth said he saw Oliver roaming around with blood on his face.

“Olly still clung on to her, though. I loved that boy, and he was my favorite, but he was always so clingy.” Holly folded her arms on the table and leaned forward. “Is he still that way?” she asked with a smile and a flick of her brows, as if she was merely gossiping. Holly rolled her eyes when Clary didn’t bother to respond. “Then they struggled some more, and he pushed her down the well.”

Clary took a moment to draw a breath through her nose. “You’re lying.”

“All that was left was the jacket she was wearing.”

It took all of Clary’s self-control to keep herself from swallowing hard, because that matched everything Seth had told her.

“I told you: I always know what my boys are up to.”

Clary shook her head. Or tried to. It came out as a jerky motion of her head.

“You can deny it all you want.” Holly waved her off. “Go ahead. Stay with Seth. I’ll make it so he’ll never be able to look at you again. You’ll be the woman who caused his brother to go to jail. Poor Olly.” She checked her gleaming nails. “I don’t think he’ll do well in prison, do you?”

“You’re lying.”

Holly laughed sweetly. “If that’s what you want to think, then so be it. We’ll see who will win in the end.”

“Win?” Clary clenched her fists to stop herself from strangling Holly. “This is not a game.”

“It is to me, and I’ll make sure those boys learn never to cross me by the end of it.”

“You’re insane.”

“I always know what my boys are up to,” Holly sang and laughed.

Clary turned and pounded on the door.

“Leave Seth, or I’ll release the evidence of Olly’s murder.”

Clary wanted to run out once the door slid open, but she had to wait in the small space, waiting for the second door to open. She had to listen to Holly laugh and sing while her thoughts and feelings swirled.

Everything was such a mess, and she felt a sudden need to throw up.

Once the first door opened, she bolted.

She burst out, and Uncle David stopped her with a firm grip on her shoulders.

She wasn’t sure what her expression was—she didn’t even know what to think or feel—but it must have shown the horror that was dawning on her.

Uncle David’s face was full of compassion, as was his one word. “Clary.”

“Oh, God.”

His arms went around her. “What happened?”

Clary sucked in a breath. She was completely shell-shocked. She’d thought the talk was going well, and she had the upper hand. She showed Holly that she wasn’t afraid of her, and that was it.

She had thought, moments ago, that this was the end.

She thought once Holly realized she couldn’t manipulate Clary, she’d give up. Pete would become a non-issue. At worst, Clary would file for a restraining order.
