“Her relationship with Edward Eolenfeld ensures that she’ll never lack for money. He told me that his wife left Clary some money, and I’ll bet he will do the same.”

“And if one day she decides to leave, for whatever reason. What will you do then?”

“I’ll just have to do everything to make sure that day never comes.”

“And if it does?”

Seth sighed heavily. “I can’t.”

Elton frowned.

“I can’t imagine that. I don’t want to, so I’m going back to bed and hold her instead of having this conversation with you.”

“Women want to be in first place, Seth. I’m sure you know that. She may not mind right now, but she would when you keep choosing us.”

“Then can’t you just make it so that I don’t have to choose?” Seth sat back down on the couch. “Can’t you get over whatever knots you have in your heart to do this for me?”

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“We thought we were protecting you when we kept you out of mundane family stuff. Were we?” He stood again. “You’re not protecting me, Elton. Every time you grunt or roll your eyes at Clary, every time you blatantly show her she isn’t welcome—now in her own house—you’re hurting me. She lets your comments roll off her. At least she seems to. But they don’t roll off me. Whenever you do that, I don’t understand why you can’t just have my back.”

Elton leaned back. “I have your back.”

“I’m letting you know you don’t. You can stick to your opinion or try to understand me. It’s your choice.” Seth strode away. He’d wasted enough time with Elton, and their conversation didn’t seem to be going anywhere.

CHAPTER 19

Standing outside the small plane, Clary stared up at the private jet. Uncle David had taken her suitcase once they got out of the car.

She’d sneaked out of bed, grabbed her already packed suitcase, and got into the car that Uncle David had waiting for her.

Throughout the drive, they were quiet. Neither of them spoke, and she was grateful for the silence. She wasn’t sure what was going on in her mind. To her, there was nothing but darkness, sucking every thought away.

She didn’t feel like herself at all.

She felt as if she was watching a shell of a woman, staring into space.

“You’re leaving?”

Clary jumped at the accusing tone. “What are you doing here?” she asked Elton.

“I followed you. I was in the kitchen when I saw you heading out with a suitcase.”

She sighed heavily. “Just go home.” She turned back toward the private jet and took two steps forward.

“You can’t leave.” Elton grabbed her arm. “You made Seth believe you’d stay. You can’t just leave. You’ll destroy him.”

“You’re the one who wanted me to.”

“You want an apology? Fine. I’m sorry. I was wrong.”

Clary shrugged out of his hold. “Stop it.”

“Seth doesn’t know, does he?” Elton cut in front of her. “Or he’d be right here. How can you just up and leave like this? Do you know what this will do to him?”

Clary tried to sidestep him.

“I’m not letting you do this to him.” Elton grabbed her arm again, harder this time. “I don’t care if—”
