“Missing?” Zane got up. “What do you mean missing?”

The front door opened, and in the split second before someone stepped into view, Seth held his breath, hoping and praying it was Clary.

But it was only Elton.

Elton looked at him, then sighed.

“You know where she went,” Seth said and stormed over. “Did you say something to her?” He grabbed his brother’s shirt and shoved him against the wall.

“No I didn’t!”

“Where is she?”

Zane pried Seth off Elton. “Calm down.”

“She wouldn’t leave for no reason!”

Elton closed his eyes. “I don’t know. I don’t know what’s right anymore.”

Seth lunged for his brother again, but Zane had a firm grip on his arms.

“Elton, you’d better explain,” Oliver said.

Elton looked at Oliver, then at Seth. He opened his mouth, then shut it. Then opened his mouth, only to shut it again.

“You chased her away.” Seth jabbed an accusing finger toward Elton. “I told you last night how I feel about this whole thing. Why do you have to be so stubborn? Just because you love misery so much, you want all of us to be miserable like you are?”

Elton’s widening eyes pushed his brows up.

“Seth, shut up,” Zane said and released him.

“It isn’t because of me.” Elton ran both his hands through his hair and turned away.

“Elton.” Zane pinned Seth with a warning glare, then stepped toward Elton. “What happened?”

“It isn’t my fault.”

“I’m not saying it is,” Zane said. “I’m asking what happened.”

“Holly! Holly’s what happened.” Elton tried to go up the stairs, but Seth jumped forward.

“You’re not going anywhere.”

Zane shoved Seth back. “Stay away from him.”

“Get out,” Seth said to Elton. “Get out. I don’t want to see you.”

Elton’s jaw dropped. “I had nothing to do with why she left. Why don’t you believe me? I saw her leave. I followed her, and I tried to get her to stay.” He stepped toward Seth. “You wanted me to have your back. I did!” He shoved Seth back. “I begged! She refused to come back.”

“Why? Why would she leave for no reason? She loves me.”

“And that’s why she has to go.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” Seth yelled. He hadn’t realized he’d done that until he noticed the deafening silence that fell.

“What’s going on?” Aldric asked in a sleepy voice as he came downstairs, with Andrea right behind him.

Elton looked around at everyone and ran his hand through his hair again before cursing. “What the hell.” He looked over at Andrea. “Can I have a few minutes with my brothers?”
