“Clary.”

“I’m sorry.” She got up and moved across the aisle. “Now you’re not sitting across from me.”

Uncle David sighed. “Do you want to call your nonna?”

She shook her head.

“Mr. E?”

“No.”

Uncle David sighed again. “Would you like something to eat?”

“No.” She turned on her side and pretended to sleep so she didn’t have to answer any of Uncle David’s questions.

“Holly said something, didn’t she?”

She kept her eyes closed.

“You can’t believe anything she has to say. She’s a terrific liar.”

“I know. I was warned.”

“Then why are you running? The Clary I know always faced her problems head on. Who cares if one of the world’s richest man disagrees with what you’re doing? If it’s right, you’ll do it.”

“I’m not right.”

“Then why are you doing it?”

“You’ve been with Mr. E long enough. Do you really need to ask me that?”

“Clary.” The squeaky sound on the seat opposite her let her know Uncle David had shifted his seat, too. “What did you get yourself into?”

She refused to speak.

“Since you know I’m used to gray areas, tell me what’s wrong. We can fix it—whatever it is.”

Clary licked her lips. They could.

“I promise not a word will get to your nonna.”

She pressed a hand to her face and shook her head yet again. However tempting the offer was, she couldn’t. She couldn’t ask anyone else to take this on their conscience—especially not people who so doted on her.

Uncle David shifted forward and took her hand. “Clary, whatever the problem is, the faster you tell me, the faster I can start fixing it.”

“I can’t.”

“You won’t.”

“I can’t. I’m sorry. I can’t.”

Uncle David’s gaze roamed across her face.

“I’m sorry.”

“It breaks my heart to see you cry like this.”

“Have you told Grandma Moretti and Mr. E that I’m coming to Thailand?”
