“She threw a fit when the police got there, and then she left.”

“Did she take anything with her? Did anyone check her car?”

“I’m not sure.”

“The investigators Mr. E hired. Did they speak with the staff?”

Uncle David nodded. “All of them mentioned they heard some commotion, but they’d always been told to mind their own business.”

“Could any of them have helped Holly move a dead body?”

Uncle David’s brows rose.

“Just answer me.”

“Anything is possible. But from what I can tell, none of her servants had much loyalty to her. Everyone badmouthed her. Everyone was more than happy to take the money Edward provided and seek employment elsewhere.”

“So you don’t believe anyone would move a dead body for her.”

“No.” He paused. “Maybe one. There was a gardener who seemed besotted with her. But he was a scrawny, clumsy, and somewhat cowardly fellow. I doubt he could’ve dealt with a body.”

She licked her lips. “Did you arrange for anyone to move a body?”

Uncle David rolled his eyes. “No.”

“Did Mr. E get—”

“No. If he did, I would know.” Uncle David steepled his hands. “Clary—”

“I can’t tell you.”

“That will only make me imagine the worst.”

“No matter how bad it gets, at least you’ll know that it’s just your imagination,” she said and clasped her hands together. “Take me to the house where Holly was living with the Andersons, right before everything happened. Don’t ask me why,” she said when Uncle David opened his mouth. “Just do what I ask.”

“How brazen of you.”

“And don’t tell Mr. E or Grandma Moretti about this.”

Uncle David laughed once and shook his head. “No one would ever expect me to keep a secret from Edward.”

She didn’t reply to that statement. Instead, she just looked at him and waited.

Uncle David put his hands on his knees. “Let me go talk to the pilot.” He stood and trotted down the aisle. “And if your Grandma Moretti finds out and throws a knife my way, I’m hiding behind you.”

CHAPTER 21

“Where are we going?” Uncle David strode alongside her.

“The well.”

“Are we going to find something in there?”

“I hope to God we don’t.”

Uncle David pointed her in the right direction, and she took off running. “I can’t—”

“Don’t run,” she yelled over her shoulder. “Take your time.” She skirted around the house and spotted the well, so she made her way toward it.
