“Do you?”

“It’s just my theory. Clariology.”

He laughed once. “Lay it on me.”

“Besides fight or flight, people freeze. I think as a child, you probably froze up with confusion or fear when Holly reached out to you. You said that was usually an indication that things were about to get bad. I think your body just got used to reacting that way.”

“Is it too much to ask for you to be patient with me?”

She walked her fingers toward his hand, then brushed a fingertip down the length of his index finger. “Patience has never been my strong suit.”

Seth fought the urge to swallow hard. “You’ve been patient with Elton.”

“Because you guys have every right to be angry.”

“Not with you.”

A corner of her lips hooked back into a wry smile. “I’m used to it. It’s part of the package that comes with being associated with one of the richest men in the world.” She waved it off. “What I was trying to say was that I don’t need patience for this. Now that I know I’m not reminding you of things you’d rather forget, I’m okay.”

Seth lifted her hand to his lips and pressed a soft kiss to the back of it. “Thank you.”

Her lips curled.

Their attention snapped over to her phone when it buzzed.

Another message.

She shared an uneasy gaze with Seth before clicking into it, and then she turned the phone to him. Stay away from him.

Seth tightened his grip on her hand and lifted his phone again.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to engage with the person.”

He frowned.

“Ron says it isn’t good to engage with such people.”

“Define ‘such people.’”

“People trying to get attention. Any response will only encourage them to continue doing what they are doing.”

The muscles along Seth’s cheeks twitched.

“It’s probably just a prank.”

“It’s very specific. How many people know about us?”

“Tamara and Neil.”

“Both in custody.”

Clary drew in a breath, then laughed. “Neil thinks you’re my fiancé, so the rest of the boys’ club probably knows it too.”

Boys’ club—the higher management at EB Co.—the bank with the most toxic culture.

“You don’t have all their numbers?”

She shook her head. “I don’t contact them outside of work.” She rolled her eyes. “I’d prefer not to have to contact them for work either.”
