He should think about his brothers, think about how devastated they would be.

She closed her eyes and felt the tears fall because she already knew he wasn’t leaving her side. “I’m so sorry, Seth. This is all my fault.”

“Hey.” Seth bent so their eyes were level. “Don’t cry.” He brushed the pad of his thumb across her cheek. “I gave your Mr. E my word that I’d try my best to make sure you live a blissfully happy life.”

“Seth …” She sniffed and blew out a breath, reining in her emotions because now was the worst time for her to have a breakdown. Seth didn’t have the time for that.

“I love you.”

“And I love you, too.” She closed her eyes and more tears fell. When she opened her mouth again, she almost apologized, but she shut her mouth instead.

And despite the ticking clock, Seth waited—without a hint of impatience.

“What are you going to do?”

“Anything electrical can only work when there’s power running through it.”

“You’re going to cut the wire?” She tipped her head forward against his forehead. “Isn’t that something people do in the movies?”

“Trust me.”

She nodded slowly. “Take my vest.”

“No.” He gave her a peck on the lips before she could reply. “Stay here.” He walked back toward Hugh.

Clary wriggled her toes, then stood and followed.

Seth frowned at her. “What are you doing?”

“I want to stay close to you.”

Seth opened his mouth, but Clary continued, “I don’t know when the bomb squad is arriving, but I want to be near you.” She shrugged. “I’ve made up my mind, as you have. So … let’s not waste time arguing.”

Seth ran his tongue under his teeth. “What am I going to do with you?”

Clary’s lips curled. “You’re supposed to make me blissfully happy, apparently.” She sat on the edge of the coffee table, giving him enough space to work on Hugh.

Seth sat and opened his toolbox.

“What—”

Clary slapped Hugh on the leg, cutting off whatever he was about to say. “Your grandfather’s here.”

“Here? As in he’s here in the building?”

She shook her head. “In San Francisco.”

“He’s been here all along?”

“No. He just flew in, I think. I didn’t see him, Seth did.”

Hugh’s gaze darted over to Seth just as he leaned back. Then his gaze dropped to the vest. Seth dropped his tool and cupped a hand over Hugh’s mouth—right as the Eolenfeld went into a panic mode.

Hugh’s hands moved toward the vest, seemingly ready to rip it off.

He must’ve seen the timer.
