Her grandmother pulled down her hand. “You.” She knocked Clary on the head. “You got engaged without telling me?”

Clary shrank away from Grandma Moretti, and Seth was immediately by her side.

He wrapped his arm protectively around her, keeping his hand on her head.

Grandma Moretti’s eyes narrowed, and Clary—not in the mood to defend him—shot him a glare.

“It’s not an engagement ring,” he said with a sheepish smile. “It was to replace the one she lost.”

Grandma Moretti’s brows drew together. “I don’t understand.”

“You have a flight to catch.” Clary spun Grandma Moretti around and gave her a light shove while giving Mr. E a please-help-me look.

“Come on, Giulia.”

“It’s a private jet. They’ll wait.”

Clary groaned. “We’re not engaged.” She looped her arm through Grandma Moretti’s and dragged her toward the elevator. “My fake ring went over the cliff, and Seth bought me one to replace it.” She cupped a hand on Mr. E’s elbow and pulled him along.

“Is it a real diamond?”

Clary blinked. She hadn’t expected that question. “Yes.”

“Then you can accept it as your engagement ring. It’s fate.”

Clary rolled her eyes and nudged Grandma Moretti into the elevator. “He didn’t ask.”

“Seth!” Grandma Moretti hollered from inside as the door was closing.

“Bye!” Clary shouted over her grandmother’s voice. “Enjoy your vacation! Don’t get drunk and stay out of trouble!” She held her breath as the door closed completely. Only when it didn’t open again did she sigh.

She jumped and pressed a hand to her chest when she spun around to see Seth right behind her. “Jesus.”

“Nope. Just me.”

“I’m sorry about that.”

Seth lifted her left hand and played with the ring. “I heard Grandma Moretti eloped after meeting Grandpa Moretti—in under a week.”

“And she’s been telling me my whole life that I shouldn’t lose my head for love.”

“She regretted it?”

Clary shook her head. “They were very much in love—the whole time they were together.”

“So why?”

“I guess she wants me to have it all without the heartache she went through. She hasn’t spoken to her family since.”

“You’re her family.”

“And I’m considering never speaking to her ever again.”

Seth laughed softly.

Clary kneaded her neck and yawned softly. “I don’t know why I’m so tired.”

“You’ve had a long day.”
