“Christmas miracles are as real as Santa Claus.”

She snapped her head toward him. “Let’s make a bet.”

“It’s not that I look down on you, but I’m pragmatic. So, yes. What do you want to bet?”

She pushed herself onto her elbows. “You’ll go to church with me if I get it done by Christmas.”

“Sure.”

She grinned and dropped back on the bed.

“My assistant deals with the people at work.”

She turned her face toward him, her brows puckering.

“If I’m having lunch at Movement, Tony gets my food—either from the cafeteria or at a restaurant. I have my lunch in my own office.”

Her eyes widened slightly. “But you had dinner with me outside.”

“I’m used to that particular place.”

“What about meetings? I’m sure you’d have to be around people then.”

“I endure the times I have to be around others.”

Her tongue darted across her lips. “How difficult was—is—it for you to be around me?”

Seth laughed once. “If it were difficult, you wouldn’t be here at my place.”

“So our paths really wouldn’t have crossed if you hadn’t needed the loan.”

“Yeah.”

“About that … if Zane asks again about how we met …” Clary had very skillfully skirted around the topic when his brother first brought it up.

“He already asked me.”

“What did you tell him?”

“Nothing. He’ll probably ask again.”

“And you’ll still tell him nothing?”

“I’ll tell him the truth.” Because if his brother couldn’t get the answer from Seth, he’d get it from Clary.

She gave him a sympathetic smile.

“As for the others,” he said, “they don’t have to know.”

“Understood.”

He jerked his chin toward her phone. “If you get any more of those text messages, promise you’ll let me know?”

She nodded. “Don’t worry so much. I have a lot of angels protecting me.” She gave him a mischievous smile, then frowned when he didn’t react. “Did you hear what I said?”

Seth cupped a hand against her face. “As long as you’re safe, I don’t mind who’s guarding you.” He brushed his thumb across her cheek. “Even a detective who obviously has a crush on you.”

Her brows drew even closer.
