Zane turned his face aside and folded his arms across his chest. “Do you have the number?”

Seth pushed his phone toward his brother.

“It isn’t a private number? Did you try calling back?”

“Apparently, Woznick told Clary that it isn’t wise to respond to such people.”

A corner of Zane’s lips hooked back into a smirk. “So you were jealous.” His brother’s head bobbed up and down. “Not bad. You were rather composed.”

“What did you think I would do?”

His brother shrugged. “Throw him out?”

“The detective’s trying to keep her safe.” Which meant they were on the same side. He poked his tongue into his cheek. “How did Oliver get injured that night?”

“I don’t know.”

“You didn’t ask?” While Seth went to get rid of the bloodied jacket, Zane had stayed with Oliver.

“He was bleeding. I was trying to fix that so no one would find out.”

“So what the hell happened that night? Did you see Winnie?”

Zane frowned. “Do you think I, or any one of us, had something to do with it?”

Seth sighed heavily. “So Jimmy insisted we were the ones who hurt Winnie simply because he saw me trying to bury that bloodied jacket?”

“That was what I assumed.”

“Aren’t you curious how Oliver got hurt that day?”

“I haven’t given Jimmy or Winnie any thought—until now.” Zane leaned back in the chair. “And it wasn’t unusual for Oliver to turn up hurt. He used to do crazy things while he sleepwalked.”

“Half his face was drenched in blood.”

Zane didn’t have an answer this time.

“Should we ask him?” Seth asked.

“No. Do you want to him to have an episode of night terror while Clary is here?”

“She probably wouldn’t mind if I explained it to her.”

Zane laughed once. “You have a lot of confidence in her.” He held up his hand, palm facing Seth. “And unlike you, I’m not worried about Clary. I’m more concerned about Oliver. He doesn’t just get night terror for one night.”

Seth tipped his head back.

“Just let it go, Seth. Jimmy and Winnie aren’t our problem. They never were.”

“What if Jimmy’s the one sending Clary the messages?”

“I’m sure there’s another explanation for that. Maybe someone else has a crush on her and doesn’t want her around you.” Zane shrugged. “Maybe Ron Woznick has another number.”

“You think he could be that sort of guy?”

“Anyone could be that sort of guy,” Zane said. “How long is Clary staying?”

“As long as she wants.” Seth straightened. “She’s moving into the spare apartment with her new assistant.”
