Regardless, it was so distracting he almost forgot he wasn’t supposed to indulge her irrationality.

He narrowed his eyes. Be serious, he mouthed.

How could she be joking around at a time like this? Gavin Ressler had threatened to slash her face and actually broke into her apartment to try to do so. And that man had escaped prison and come all the way here for her.

I am, she mouthed back and blinked innocently.

He stared back at her, deadpan, so she pouted and straightened. As she did, she left a small space between them.

Which was unacceptable.

Seth released her hand and hooked his hand on her hip to draw her close. But just then the elevator door opened.

Since when did their elevator move so fast?

“Smart people can have accidents,” Zane said and effectively drew Seth’s attention back to the matter at hand, which should be infinitely more important than wanting to be close to Clary.

Zane and Detective Woznick strode out of the elevator. Seth and Clary trailed behind, he was grateful that the large warehouse elevator door was wide enough for them to exit together.

“I know.” Detective Woznick peered over his shoulder at them. “It’s just a gut feeling.”

Seth’s brows twitched. “You came all the way here for a gut feeling?”

Clary suddenly gasped. “Have you checked in on Gemma? Are she and Mrs. Bestie safe?”

“Yes,” the detective said in a bored tone. “I informed Mrs. Bestie. She didn’t want to let Gemma know, but promised she’d be extra careful. I have arranged for more patrols to drive by their house.”

Clary pursed her lips.

“Gemma is Gavin’s daughter?” Seth asked as they opened the door to his apartment.

She nodded. “Mrs. Bestie is Gemma’s foster mother.”

Detective Woznick entered and stood next to the door. “Do you want me to tell Gemma?”

“No. Mrs. Bestie’s right. Gemma’s been through too much with Gavin already. She has a lot on her mind now, too.” Clary glanced toward the kitchen.

“I have nothing to eat or drink here,” Seth said. “So” —he pointed to the couch— “let’s sit and you can tell us why you’re really here.”

“I need you to ask Edward Eolenfeld to speed up the DNA test,” Ron answered without even waiting. He held his hand up, palm out, toward Clary. “I know what you’re going to say, but you should know I wouldn’t have asked if it wasn’t necessary.”

Clary’s chest rose, and she blew out a breath through her mouth. “Why?”

“The police officers and detectives I’ve spoken with don’t believe me. They’re sure that the body is Gavin Ressler, so the DNA test isn’t a priority. It could be six weeks or more before they get the results.”

Clary’s lips disappeared between her teeth.

“Why can’t you put in a request?” Zane asked.

“I’m on vacation, not here in an official capacity.”

Clary’s brows rose. “You took vacation time to come here?”

“I owe you one.” Ron shrugged a shoulder. “I promised to keep you safe.”

Zane shared a glance with Seth. Though his eldest brother was happy for him, he didn’t seem to trust Clary all that much. “That means your captain doesn’t believe you either.” He tipped his head to the side. “Are you really here because you don’t believe Gavin Ressler’s dead? Or are you using that as an excuse to see Clary?”

Clary’s brows puckered.
