“He told me that he has a hotel room ready for Clary,” the New York detective continued.

“She’s perfectly safe with me.”

“The hotel probably has better security.”

“I’m an extremely light sleeper, and Zane’s living across the hall from us.”

“But your brother won’t always be home.”

Seth didn’t like talking in circles. “What exactly do you want from me? To convince Clary to move into the hotel?” He leaned back in the chair. “That’s not going to happen.”

“Then let me stay with you.”

He laughed dryly. “No.”

“I’ll sleep on the couch.”

“Do you sleep on the couch for all the victims in your cases?”

Ron Woznick twisted his jaw to the side. “I owe it to her.”

“You like her.”

The detective put his coffee aside. “I just want her safe.”

“I’ll keep her safe.”

“You’re so sure of yourself.”

“So are you,” Seth said. “You don’t think that I can keep her safe, but you think you can.”

The muscles along the detective’s cheeks twitched.

“You’re not staying at my place,” Seth said. “Thanks for warning us about Ressler.” He pushed his chair back and glanced behind the counter at the two baristas moving back and forth preparing the drinks.

Ron Woznick sighed. “Look.” He tapped into his phone, then slid it across the small table to Seth.

On the screen was a photo of several pieces of crumpled paper.

“What am I looking at?” Seth asked.

“What’s left of a letter.”

Seth zoomed into the photo and squinted. He could see two full sentences: You’re right about her. I can’t take it anymore. Then one partial phrase: anything for you.

“I believe Gavin Ressler had inside help. I heard about what happened with her ex-assistant.”

“You think Tamara Chambers has something to do with this?” Seth stared at the photo again. “Is this the only one you have?”

The detective nodded. “As I said, he’s smart. He destroyed everything else. He was prepared. He probably knew he’d be escaping.”

“But he didn’t destroy this.”

“He tried. His cell mate secretly kept it.”

“Why?”

The detective brought an ankle to his knee. “In exchange for leniency, bargaining power for more benefits.”
