She moved to take another bite of the muffin.

“Have you thought about how you’re going to sell your compensation idea to the board?” he asked.

She stopped with her mouth open, ready to sink her teeth into the muffin. She pursed her lips and dropped the hand with the muffin. “You really want this, don’t you? That’s why you’re spoiling my appetite.”

“Eat.”

She took a bite.

“Microsoft donates heavily to developing nations. When children in those areas receive education, they grow up to become working adults who will need computers.”

Clary chewed on the muffin. “I get what you mean. We do things right, it makes EB Co.’s reputation better.”

“It’d re-establish trust and gain future customers.”

“You’re brilliant.”

He shrugged a shoulder. “I understand the language of money. Budgeting and all,” he said in a sardonic tone.

“You’re really affected by what Aldric said.”

“I just feel betrayed by it.” He hadn’t meant to say that, but it’d always been so easy to talk to her.

Perhaps it was because she’d always been so open about being herself.

“Betrayed? Why?”

He drew a deep breath through his nose. “Because if anyone was going to say bad things about me, I didn’t think it would be one of my brothers.”

“So you don’t care that a person like Pete Laker is texting to warn me about you.”

“I’m more concerned about whether he is a danger.” Because Seth would never hurt Clary.

She cracked a smile. “You know Aldric loves you.”

He blinked once.

“You do know that, right?”

“Yes,” he sputtered. “I suppose.” He just never thought about it.

The only times he or his brothers had uttered the words ‘I love you’ were to Holly. That was a requirement set by Holly. They were to always tell her how much they loved her.

If they didn’t, they would be punished.

If they didn’t sound sincere enough, they would be punished.

Since getting out from under Holly’s control, he had never heard his brothers—even Aldric with all the women he dated—utter the words ‘I love you.’

But yes. He would give his life to protect his brothers. He supposed that was love.

“You should’ve seen his face when he came to brag about what an awesome person you are,” she continued.

His gaze locked onto Clary’s. He would give his life for Clary too.

It wasn’t just an abstract thought. He knew for sure he would give up his life to protect hers.

Hell, he’d give up his life if it’d keep that smile on her face.
