He wasn’t sure what she was worried about, but he ached to do something to make her feel better.

“The rest is already in the fridge,” Oliver said.

While everyone’s attention was on Oliver, Seth reached over to Clary, who was seated next to him, and gave her arm a squeeze. It’ll be okay, he mouthed.

He wasn’t all that sure himself, but whatever he had to do to make things okay with her Grandma Moretti, he would.

She nodded and turned to Grandma Moretti. “Seth basically built this place himself. Isn’t it impressive?”

“He forgot to fill the cabinets,” Grandma Moretti said and turned her gaze to Seth. “Clary loves cooking, or so she tells me. I can never tell if she’s just humoring me or being serious.”

Clary’s brows drew together, and she leaned away while her arm remained looped around Grandma Moretti’s arm. “You always said you knew everything going on in this head of mine.”

Grandma Moretti’s eyes narrowed again.

Clary’s head bobbed up and down. “Very well. You’re right.”

“Clary can buy whatever she wants or needs for the kitchen,” Seth said. “I don’t mind.”

“Apparently,” Clary drawled, “he has more than enough money to spare.”

“Seth.” Aldric burst into the kitchen. “The flowers you ordered for Clary’s grandmother are here.” He held the bouquet of flowers toward Seth, then glanced over at Grandma Moretti.

Clary’s brows rose, and Seth gave a subtle shrug when Aldric strode over to Grandma Moretti.

“Hi, Mrs. Moretti. I’m Aldric, fourth in line of the Andersons. According to them, the rebel.” He flashed a charming smile and held the bouquet of flowers out with both hands. “I believe Seth ordered these for you.”

Grandma Moretti looked over with an admonishing smile, clearly seeing through whatever Aldric had planned.

Seth appreciated that his brother was trying, though. This was way better than the plan Aldric concocted for Clary.

“Thank you.” Grandma Moretti set the flowers on the empty seat next to her. “Just call me Grandma Moretti.”

Zane and Elton joined them at the dining table at the same time.

Seth shared a glance with Zane, and his eldest brother nodded.

“Do I need to introduce them?” Clary asked.

“I’ve already met them.” Grandma Moretti gave a wave over the food. “Eat.”

Clary’s gaze flitted over to Elton, who had remained silent and was staring at the table. “You’re awfully quiet, Elton. Don’t worry. You can show your blatant dislike of me in front of Grandma Moretti.”

“Always the outspoken one.” Grandma Moretti scooped a spoonful of risotto onto Oliver’s plate. “I’m glad you didn’t lose your fire.”

Clary glanced between Grandma Moretti and Elton.

“I met him once when I was preparing Christmas dinner for the Eolenfelds,” Grandma Moretti said as if she’d read Clary’s mind—all without even glancing toward her. “Holly was …”

“Threatening me,” Elton said.

Seth immediately knew what Elton was talking about. Holly rarely ever took them to the main Eolenfeld mansion, and they’d only been there for one Christmas.

Elton had snapped at Holly for something she said, and she’d dragged him away, forbidding the rest of them to follow.

Clary sucked in a breath.

“I didn’t know what she was doing,” Grandma Moretti continued. “But I didn’t like her body language.”
