She couldn’t possibly expect him to die for her. They’d only just started dating. “We haven’t even gone on one date.” She swiped at the mirror as it grew blurry again. “But you could at least pretend to put in some effort.”

Even a tenth—no, a hundredth—of the amount of effort he’d put in to contact her so she could get him in touch with Mr. E. That would have been enough.

“But, no.” She slapped on the moisturizer. “I’m the first thing you drop.”

She sniffed and closed her eyes.

Taking a moment, she drew a deep breath through her nose and exhaled slowly through her mouth.

Stop going in circles. Clary licked her lips as she heard her own voice in her head.

They’d already been here not too long ago. Was she really going to go through this again?

She stormed out to her bedroom, pulled on her shorts and his sweater, then headed out to his bedroom.

Seth’s door opened before she got there.

His eyes locked onto hers for a second, and then his gaze dropped to her hand before he sighed.

He was still in his white shirt and black pants. His tie was gone, and the top two buttons of his shirt undone.

“Say something,” she said. “Because if you don’t, I’m leaving. This time, I’m not coming back. If you want me to stay, say it.”

“Of course I want you to stay.”

She threw her hands in the air. “Then why are you making me go?”

“Because how can I make you choose me when I can’t choose you?”

She sucked in a breath.

She understood Seth would do anything for his brothers, and this was about Oliver. She wouldn’t expect Seth to choose her over Oliver.

But some part of her—the romantic and irrational part of her—wished he could give up everything for her. Just like how Grandma Moretti had given up her family to elope with Grandpa Moretti.

She shook her head. “Grandma Moretti won’t shut me out.” But was she really all right with being with someone who would never put her first?

She’d never thought of herself as a jealous or possessive person. But to have someone who put you above all else, someone who would give up the world for you seemed like … what love was supposed to be.

Was it spoiled of her to hope for that kind of love? The kind of love she saw in movies and read in books? The kind of love Mr. and Mrs. E shared. The kind of love that made Grandma Moretti give up her privileged life to be with Grandpa Moretti.

That isn’t how the world works anymore. In the age of Tinder, perhaps Clary was simply being naive about love.

“You don’t know that,” Seth said.

“She loves me.” That was a love Clary was certain of. Nothing would change her mind on that. Nothing would shake her confidence on Grandma Moretti’s love. “She won’t …” Just give up on me. “She won’t shut me out for long.”

Clary was suddenly exhausted. She forced a smile, then turned and headed back to her bedroom.

“Clary, I don’t want you to leave.”

She glanced over her shoulder and nodded. “I’ll handle Grandma Moretti and Mr. E.” She felt Seth taking two steps after her, but she didn’t wait for him to get to her.

Once she was back in her room, she closed the door and leaned back against it.

With a sigh, she trudged over to the bed and grabbed her phone.

Mr. E picked up at the second ring. “I was beginning to wonder if you’d call.”
