Seth met her halfway. “Can you tell the detective you’re still alive and well before they send officers for a welfare check again?” He handed the phone to her and took the heater.

“So she’s not leaving?” Oliver asked as he walked beside Seth. “Who’s that?” His brother leaned forward with a frown. “Is that …” He snapped his head toward Seth.

“He’s drunk. Grandma Moretti told us to bring him in and she’d deal with him.”

“But she didn’t.”

Seth nodded. “And I didn’t think Clary would want him to freeze.”

“It isn’t that cold.”

“He’s a rich, spoiled brat. He’s not going to be used to sleeping outside like this.” The way Seth and his brothers had been. The first few months of being out on their own without much had been tough.

Thankfully, they’d never had to sleep on the streets, but the constant threat of it was stressful enough.

Seth plugged the heater in, then frowned when he noticed Clary was still on the phone.

“Are you two okay?” Oliver asked.

Seth smiled and nodded.

“So … are we still selling the robotics arm of Movement?”

“I’m not selling it. No matter what.”

“I’ll resign. I won’t be the reason why you lose the love of your life.”

“Don’t be stupid.” Seth adjusted the heater, then got up.

“You’ve sacrificed a lot for us, Seth. I won’t let you sacrifice Clary too. We’re adults now. We can fix this together. I was thinking, if we all pool our money together and if all of us are approved for loans, then—”

“Edward Eolenfeld already transferred the money to me. I signed an IOU to him.”

“But he could ask for the money back, right? If they want to force Clary to comply, he’ll back you into a corner.”

“Clary’s confident that they won’t.”

Oliver rolled his eyes. “You don’t know that. Maybe she’s just saying that to make you feel better, so she can go behind your back and make her own deal with them.”

Seth frowned.

“Just like you always do.”

“This is the first and only time I ever went to Edward Eolenfeld.”

Oliver waved it off. “Point is, I don’t trust them. Her grandmother was so nice throughout dinner, then she just flipped.” He shuddered. “I hate it when people do that.”

“Her grandmother’s just concerned.”

“Why? You’re a billionaire. Plenty of women would love to marry you just because of that.”

“I guess that means she cares enough about Clary to see beyond that.” Seth sighed. “Considering how messed up I am, I don’t quite blame her grandmother.”

Oliver fell silent. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“My sleepwalking. It’s causing so much trouble.” Oliver’s head dropped forward, like a child being told off. “This is all my fault.”
