She grinned and turned toward the car, but Seth grabbed her wrist and lifted it.

“This watch, you can send emergency messages through this, right?”

Clary scowled. “I knew I was getting away too easily.”

He narrowed his eyes.

“Yes. I’ll set you as my emergency contact while you drive me to work, okay?”

He nodded again, satisfied.

But by the time he walked around and got in, worry had swamped him again. “How about—”

“Nope.” Her lips curled back in a mischievous smile. “Rise above your feelings, my young Padawan. Or you’ll fall into the dark side, side, side, side …” she echoed in a ridiculously deep voice.

He sighed and started the car, but a text message came in from Clary before they were out of the garage.

“The login and password, and the calling card to Jesus.”

Seth frowned and tapped into the message she’d sent. Under the login and password was a link to a Bible app.

She laughed when he gave her an annoyed glare. “Hurry. I’m going to be late for work.”

CHAPTER 20

The Christmas miracle Clary had prayed for was progressing just fine. Despite the upheaval yesterday, everyone seemed to have settled back into work or their temporary positions relatively quickly.

There were a few setbacks.

It seemed the IT system at EB Co. was more outdated than she expected. She wouldn’t be able to set up the automated system with what they had, but she’d given Seth a call and got her IT people hooked up with his.

She felt kind of guilty for taking up his time and resources from Movement. Christmas was around the corner, so she was sure his employees wouldn’t appreciate having something extra—that had absolutely nothing to do with their jobs—to do.

But Seth had called back in less than an hour to tell her that it was doable and he’d send a team down to deal with it.

So with that settled and her own employees separated into different teams, each briefed on their work, she went off to meet Grandma Moretti for lunch.

She took a photo of the car’s number plate and sent it to Seth. This was something Grandma Moretti had always made her do—even when she was studying in the UK. If she ordered a ride, she either—very obviously—took a photo of the number plate and sent it to Grandma Moretti and Mr. E, or told them the plate number while she was on the phone with either of them.

And besides her necklace, she always shared her location whenever she was going to a new place. That wasn’t often, but she always did it, even if she was just going to a friend’s place.

Since the incident that took away her parents and Grandpa Moretti, they had all been more paranoid. They had never been back to Mexico, and Mrs. E and Grandma Moretti had drilled all these safety habits into her.

So to think that Grandma Moretti could try and hurt her …

Clary smiled and shook her head, then put in one side of her earphones. She kept an eye on the GPS on her phone while listening to Christian songs, as she had this morning.

Despite what she’d said to Seth and Oliver, she was still nervous about meeting her nonna.

Not about being dosed with sleeping drugs and taken away to an unknown location, but she wasn’t sure if she could change Grandma Moretti’s mind. She could count the number of times she’d gone head-to-head with her grandmother on one hand.

At those times, Mr. E always came in as the mediator.

And she supposed, if she really needed help, she could count on Mr. E to help her.

But she didn’t want to.

She wanted Grandma Moretti to accept Seth and his brothers.
