What on Earth was he saying right now?

Charles took a step back and tossed the cushion onto the sofa, then brushed his hands down his shirt. “I want a great-granddaughter. Like Chloe. Not you.”

“You can’t really order babies like that, but sure.”

“I suppose I’ll allow some canoodling.” He cleared his throat. “I won’t tell your father.”

“Thanks, Gramps.”

He shuffled towards the door. “Carry on.”

I watched as he left, slamming the door behind him. “What just happened?”

Theo grinned. “Told you. Easy pickings.”

“You’re insane.” I shook my head and followed in the duke’s footsteps to the door. “Let’s go. You have a meeting to get ready for.” I paused and looked back at him. “Sir.”

“I told you not to call me that when we’re alone.”

I smiled, holding the door open. “But we’re at work. What else am I supposed to call you?”

“I have a list,” he said, following me. “Would you like to hear it?”

I scooted behind him and gave him a push in the back. “Don’t make me call your mother.”

“You know, sometimes I think you’re the boss here.” Theo laughed, and the sound trickled across my skin in a wave of warmth.

I dipped my chin, smiling.

Yeah.

Maybe I was.

EPILOGUE – CHLOE

Forever

Eighteen Months Later

“Your husband is here to see you, ma’am.” Melody poked her head into my office.

I looked up at her and wrinkled up my nose. “I’m sorry, you’ll have to send him away. I don’t have a husband.”

She sighed. “I told him that just like you said last time, but he insisted that was how I introduced him.”

“Please tell the delusional gentleman that he has to wait another three weeks before I can see my husband,” I said, grinning. “Maybe offer him a coffee or a blanket so he can be comfortable for the duration of his stay.”

“Do you hear this shit, Melody?” Theo’s head appeared over the top of Melody’s. “This is workplace harassment.”

“No, a strange man showing up to my office and continually calling himself my husband is workplace harassment.” I stared at him for a second. “And please don’t bring my secretary into this.”

“She was my secretary first.”

“Hey, you sound just like Gramps.”

Theo froze. “I take it back. Every word.”

I grinned and looked at Melody. “Did you confirm the hotel reservations for this weekend?”
