“I just want to really get to know you. Without the drama or craziness. We have a great start, but I have to make sure, for Olive.”

“I get it,” I say, although all I want is to be reckless with her. If she wanted to run to the courthouse today and make it official, I would call and make the appointment. If she wanted to make another baby tonight, I would make her come while doing it.

However, whatever my love wants, she will get.

“I should get settled.” Walking to the door, I turn around. “You’re welcome, anytime.”

She clasps her hands behind her back. “Thank you. I do own it.”

“It’s perfect. Because you can be very, very loud when I make you come.”

A flush blooms on her cheeks. “Shush, Max.”

“I mean, I won’t sneak over here,” I say. “Boundaries.”

“You’re welcome to have food here and eat with us,” Emily says.

“Sounds like a plan.”

“Perfect,” she says. It’s awkward for a second before she runs towards me and kisses me, holding the back of my head as she leans into me.

My lips move to her ear, and I whisper, “I do love you, though.”

She pushes me away, but I see a little smile.

“We usually go over to my parents’ house on Sundays for dinner. Come.”

“I would love to,” I say. I move toward the door and turn around.

“Hey, Em?”

“Yeah?” She turns, and I swear a beam of sunlight casts a glow on her from the window. The freckles across her nose, her pink lips, her large green eyes. She’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

“I do have a question for you.” I walk toward her, trying not to smirk. Taking her hand, I gaze into her eyes. I let her think what I want her to think, and she starts shaking her head.

“No, please don’t. My brother Cam did that before his wife was ready, and it was just bad—”

“I’m not proposing. Yet.” I cover her hand with mine. “Will you be my girlfriend?”

Her lips quiver with a smile as she looks down.

“Is that a yes?”

She nods and I take her in my arms, spinning her. As we kiss, we hear giggling and turn to see our daughter sitting on the steps, covering her mouth.

“Were you spying on Mom and Dad?” Emily asks.

“Maaaaybeeee,” Olive says, scampering off.

“She’s everywhere,” I say, still holding her mother.

“She is. Good thing we have the love shack.”

I wink at her before I leave to unpack.

When we arrive for dinner at the Finches, all of her brothers eye me, especially Cameron. He’s taller than me by at least three inches, and broad where I’m lean. He stares at me off and on, in between tending to his very pregnant wife.

“So,” he says, cornering me by the liquor cart. “You and my sister?”
