“I can go get some napkins,” I offer.

“It’s fine.” She licks her hand, and I imagine her licking my cock, making my shorts tight with the thought. I cough into my hand and turn away.

“What?” she asks.

“Nothing” comes out a little too high. Even though she said she didn’t want some, I jog to the snack bar to grab a stack of small napkins. It’s just the kind of break I need to calm down. I return with a stack and hand them to her.

“Thanks, Max.” She wipes her arm down, and I take the crumpled balls of paper back.

“Let’s take a walk.” We walk between blankets and clusters of chairs as we watch kids and adults play in the lake, splashing water on each other.

“Do you and Olive come out here often?”

“Once in a while.” Emily points to a house coming up. “My parents own this house. My brother Reid and his fiancée Whitney live there.”

“Reid was the brother I saw you with that one time, right?”

“It was Jackson.”

“Oh, that’s right. I should’ve said hi.”

“I should’ve—”

“What?” I ask, although my heart stops in my chest, waiting for her to finish.

“It’s just sad, is all. We could’ve…I don’t know. Maybe we had a real shot back then, but at least we would’ve had a chance. Rather than a silly, honest mistake.”

“Give you a chance to be annoyed with my dental hygiene routine?”

“I’m sure I could learn a thing or two from you.”

“I can’t wait to teach Olive how to properly brush her teeth.”

Emily scoffs and lightly slaps me on the arm. I want her to do it again. “Hey, I’ll have you know I did a great job. Look how delightful our daughter is.”

“So delightful,” I agree. “That’s all you.”

“You had something to do with it. She is half you, after all.” Emily crosses her arms and bumps intentionally into me.

I bump her right back. “Are you open to more kids?” I ask.

“With the right person. You?” Emily asks.

We can get pregnant tonight runs through my head, and I shudder because it’s an asshole thing to think. However, I don’t know how I would’ve handled Emily pregnant with my baby. She wouldn’t have been able to get me off of her.

The wind picks up her curls, sweeping them across her face. Emily is still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. I shove my hands in my pockets so I don’t grab her hand.

“Are you sad you never got a chance to be a big shot in a big city and have martinis at night?”

“No,” she says.

“Not even a little bit?”

She shakes her head fervently. “Not at all. You want to know how I came up with Olive? She became my new dream. If I couldn’t have a martini with an olive after a long day in the big city, I would have a daughter named Olive. I just didn’t expect my brother to start calling her Martini out of nowhere one day. Every time he called her that, I thought of you.”

“Aww,” I say. We still walk, the invisible elephant in the room walking with us.

“However, I should’ve really thought her middle name through. For her initials.”
