“You’re spoiling me.”

“I’m glad it could finally be good for you.”

“My first time was perfect. This is also perfect, in a different way.” I play with her nipple as she lays on my chest, our skin sticking from our mutual sweat. Emily lifts her head to look at me. “I don’t want to go back to real life. I want to live in this sex bubble with you forever.”

“I know. I don’t want to go home today.”

She sits up, looking around.

“What’s wrong?”

“My clothes. Do you see them?”

She swings a leg to the floor, and I stop her. “Hey, hey. I will come back, Em. We will figure this out.”

“I know, it’s just…” She runs her hand down her face. “There’s just…I don’t know.”

“What?” I ask.

Emily grabs her phone, and her eyes pop out of her head. She swipes her thumb to read through the alerts. When she puts her phone to her ear, she covers her mouth.

“Tara, what’s going on?”

I hear muttering from the phone and I can’t make out what Tara is saying. My forehead creases as I look around for my own phone. When I open it, I see fourteen missed calls, thirteen from my mother, and one from my father.

“Maxwell, this is your father” is his usual voicemail message starter to me, but his voice is firm, stern. It cools my blood to a block of ice. “Son, your mother and I are in Goldheart. We’re at this coffee place since we don’t know where you’re staying. It’s imperative you call us back as soon as possible. Your mother tells me you have lots to discuss.”

Emily and I lower our phones at the same time and stare at each other.

“Your parents, they’re at—”

“Gold Roast.” I point to my phone. “That was my dad.”

“Max,” she says, her face turning to anguish, her eyebrows knitting together, tears slipping from those beautiful green eyes.

“It’ll be okay,” I say, cupping her cheek. “We will be a family. I promise you that.”

“Okay.” Emily doesn’t look convinced.

“I want you to come with me to the party,” I say. “As my girlfriend. As the mother of our incredible child.”

“Okay.” She sniffles back her tears. “I should really put some clothes on.”

“Me too.” I kiss her, and her lips press into mine like I’m giving her sustenance. It’s strange, but it reminds me of our last kiss before I left Goldheart to go home and then to Costa Rica the next day.

Like it’s final. It’s a kiss of goodbye.

However, there’s nothing that could happen that would make me say goodbye to her.

“Shit, fuck, shit.” My hands tremor as I move hangers, looking for the best outfit to meet the man I lied to and took his money. The hoochie dresses were out, and sometimes sundresses looked too slutty. I need to look harmless and young.

“This will have to do,” I tell myself as I pull a striped T-shirt dress from the rack and drop it over my most boring panty and bra set. Slipping my feet into sneakers, I step in front of my full-length mirror. I look cute, I feel confident. Still, my heart thumps in my chest at a rapid rhythm.

I should’ve told him. Why didn’t I tell him? It could’ve solved so many problems telling him earlier, but now, the truth will come out. Maybe it would’ve been better coming from me, not his father.
